7 shapes of bow waves, stern waves and wake to make a moving ship look like a moving ship.
Created from a mix of real wave photos and hand-painted displacement maps. The resulting greyscale images were applied to terrain objects.
It is not possible to give general instructions on how to achieve the best effect, as it always depends heavily on how the lighting in the scene interacts with the components. However, the following approach has proved to be a viable option:
White spray, e.g. on a bow wave, is best achieved by duplicating the object, slightly increasing the reflectance of the water material in the copy and moving it down a little on the y-axis - into the sea. Maybe even a little backwards. The whole process can be repeated a few times, each time with different material parameters to create more depth in the water.
