Foggy Morning in the Hills II HiRes - There are two types of fog - tule fog and oceanic fog. Tule fog is a result of warm ground and cold air causing a dense mist to rise from the moisture in the ground. It is most common in the Sacramento and San Juaquin Valleys of California. The other is Oceanic Fog which is basically a cloud that has descended to ground level. The San Francisco Bay Area has both.

Here's a picture of a tree and some oceanic fog. Near the top of the image you can see the top of this cloud that has settled in a ravine behind the tree.
