Designed in 1936 by Emile Dewoitine, to answer a call from the French Air Force offers a hunter looking succeeding Dewoitine D.510 and capable of reaching 520 km / h (hence its name), the project will be completed by the new SNCAM (after the nationalization of Dewoitine workshops). Three prototypes were built: one who stole the first time on 2 October 1938 with a Hispano-Suiza 12Y21 890 hp, will fail to exceed 480 km / h. Re-engined with a 12Y29 and equipped with a variable pitch propeller, following an accident, then it will reach, led by Leopold Galy, the speed of 825 km / h in a dive.
The other two followed in 1939, equipped them of their weapons, and March, 200 copies were ordered, followed by 600, later reduced to 510 extra in June. In September, with the opening of hostilities, the total orders passed in 1280 and in April 1940 at 2250.
