Wow...…..in the early 80's a friend of mine and I went down into this mine. It wasn't blocked off for some reason. I will never forget it. It was an amazing place. Dangerous no doubt but we were young. Thanks for posting this. I had forgotten about that day.
Bbarbs, I lived in Pittsburg from 1981 to 2007. The last 7 years there, this was literally in my back yard. Around... 2005, or so, they created an underground museum in the old sand mine. It's pretty amazing. Back in the 60s and 70s, my cousins lived near Clayton and they would often tell of teens who got lost in the mines and had to be rescued. Since then they've filled many of the shafts with concrete, and bricked up many of the addits to keep people out. (For those who don't know, a shaft is a vertical hole, and an addit is a horizontal hole.) So, BBarbs, did you live in that area? Brent
