Pumeco, you can't just become a PI. In just about every state you need a degree in criminal justice, a few years of police experience above a patrolman, never been arrested for basically anything, recommendations, background checks (that you can fail very easily for something someone else did) etc.
http://www.freshfromflorida.com/Divisions-Offices/Licensing/Private-Investigation/Private-Investigator-and-Private-Investigator-Intern-License-Requirements In order to get licensure, they want CJ coursework, internship with an existing agency, 2 years of full-time experience, and pass an examination but they don't require having served on the force. If you think that's lax, check out Arizona's requirements:

You can when you live in a free country ;-)
There are two sides to that coin. One where there is no such thing as a free country, and there isn't..
And the other where anyone can claim or be anything they want too, because they are free to do so.
You appear to be in the latter
Some things are easy to explain, other things are not........ <- Store -> <-Freebies->
You need a degree in just about anything these days, especially if it requires any form of state licensing. And the laws are different from state to state. You can try being a PI without licensing. Then find yourself in jail.
I don't know where Jaxon gets the 'spoiled brats' mentality from. At 68, his generation wasn't on the hook for $50K for a 2-yr degree. Back in the 1960s colleges weren't corporate controlled and a 2 year degree at most any community college (not including the Ivy leagues) was pretty easy to afford, or at least manageable . If your parents hadn't saved up for it, you could work a part time job to pay for the classes in most cases. There also weren't a bunch of federal student loans back then either, because they weren't really needed. I remember my mom telling me how the classes she took cost her around $45. That wasn't per class, that was per semester. And that's the way it remained for the most part through the 1970s. It wasn't until the 1980s that the cost of tuition really began to sky rocket and more companies started requiring all their employees to have a degree. Back then most people who went to college had their parents saving for their college tuition all through their elementary years so that by the time they got to college age all or most of their tuition was covered. And savings and bonds actually earned some decent interest, making it much easier to save. Today, even if you do save consistently from the minute your kid is born, by the time he reaches college age you'll be lucky if you've covered 20% of the cost. But that's why we have the federal government to hand out student loans like candy. Doesn't matter what your credit score is or your GPA, as long as you meet their minimum requirements - which is basically be at least a certain age and legally able to receive federal money, and be registered with selective service if you're male - then you qualify. Even if you already owe a small fortune in loans you still qualify every year.
I'd like to see a 23-yr old buy a restaurant these days. Not gonna happen unless he's already got money from wealthy parents.

I must have been lucky then as I got my 4 year degree without student loans and walked out with zero debt. But then I got into college with the almost 4.0 GPA from high school so I got scholarships for the first two years and then interned at companies during the summer and worked two jobs during the semester. Worked my butt of to get it done, but that's how I do things even now. Also, although it's not common for 23 year olds to get businesses, I have seen some people in their 20's with such razor-sharp instincts, they do have their own businesses and driving BMWs they've paid for on their own dime. It's all about what you see as a priority and seeing what it takes to get there. I know I spent my 20s doing management-level work and having to deal with employees that resented getting direction from a skinny kid that looked 17 but knew his stuff.

I tried my best a while back to determine the type of screw, and as far as I can tell, it's not a ballscrew. But that leaves me with either a Leadscrew or ACME, and I can't tell which. And even worse, ordering a thread gauge would be guess work without knowing the type and the measurement used, I could potentially go through the purchase of quite a few guages before I got the right one. I wish I could just buy the right guage, that would be ideal. I'm hoping it's a Lead Screw cause like you said, they're really cheap. The only thing I managed to work out with any reasonable amount of certainty, is that it's a right-handed thread I need - lol.
@Shane
So from what you tell me, and from what others have posted, being a Private Investigator is out then ... so, Bounty Hunter perhaps?
I agree with that post you made, they think we have it easy, when actually, it's them that had it easy in comparison to what people are lumbered with nowadays, it's just one constant life-long pressure cooker. Anyway, I hope you sort it, and as long as you stick to pushing for something with good pay, it could be paid off quicker than you imagine.
As a last resort, maybe heed the lyrics highlighted in red (great album BTW) ;-)
**"Scoundrel Days"
**
Was that somebody screaming?
It wasn't me for sure
I lift my head up from uneasy pillows
Put my feet on the floor
Cut my wrist on a bad thought
And head for the door
Outside on the pavement
The dark makes no noise
I can feel the sweat on my lips
Leaking into my mouth
I'm heading out for the steep hills
They're leaving me no choice
And see as our lives are in the making
We believe through the lies and the hating
That love goes free
And for want of an option
I run the wind 'round
I dream of pictures of houses burning
Never knowing nothing else to do
With death comes the morning
Unannounced and new
Was it too much to ask for?
To pull a little weight
They forgive everything but greatness
These are scoundrel days
And I'm close to calling out their names
As pride hits my face
And see as our lives are in the making
We believe through their lies and the hating
That love goes free
Through scoundrel days
I reach the edge of town
I've got blood in my hair
Their hands touch my body
From everywhere
But I know that I've made it
As I run into the air
And see as our lives are in the making
We believe through the lies and the hating
That love goes free
Through scoundrel days
Fair enough. But aren't you in software dev, M_M?
I always sucked at math. Still do. So a 4.0 was not an option for me. I always aced most everything else and my focus was always in art.
It's also about where you live and what resources you have available to you. If you grow up in a small town and the only jobs around you are fast food or retail, there's not a lot of opportunity for internships and sharpening those instincts. And it's also about who you know a lot of the time. I avoided college for a while after high school - partly because I lived in an area that didn't have schools that offered anything I was interested in, and partly because I watched several of my friends go to college right out of high school, did their 4 years, and within 2 years after they were sick of it and not working in anything related to what they went to school for. I actually had to move out of state to go to school because there were no art schools in my area - and still aren't.
I'm not worried about the loans Pumeco. I used to, but now I pretty much have a 'screw it' approach to all of it. As long as I'm working for myself they can't garnish my wages. The government allowed tuition to reach astronomical proportions and did nothing to stop it, only encouraged it, and made it so that most people can't get by without it, so let them deal with the aftermath from it. And it's finally beginning to crumble. Several for-profit schools have had to file for bankruptcy recently - including several Art Institutes. A lot of students that went to those schools are now having their loans forgiven, and that will just create a domino effect. My loans don't prevent me from living decently and I can still buy what I want when I can afford it. Should the day ever come when I actually have the money to pay them back then I will, but only what I borrowed. I don't lose sleep over it.

Don't know if you have this in America, but not too long ago the whole nation was getting harrassed by nuisance phone calls (around 6 fucking times a day), from solicitors (lawyers) trying to sell services claiming they could write-off a loan. The idea, as far as I can tell, was that if they can prove that the loan you were given was too large to be realistic for your circumstances at the time, and therefore your ability to pay, they can write-off your loan.
Can't remember what it was called, but due to the intense amount of people that were doing it, I suppose there might have been something in it.

Lead screw is not a thread type, it's how it's used. As in, moving the carriage on a lathe or the saddle on a mill. What you need to know is the thread form, is it a "V" thread or more like a "U"? If it's a "U" shape, then it's probably Acme thread, commonly available and not terribly expensive. The diameter is the measured diameter of the thread, the pitch is the distance, if metric from the edge of one turn to the edge of the next, if imperial measure, the number of threads in one inch. A thread pitch gage is not a necessity, using a machinists scale or cheap dial or digital caliper will allow measuring the pitch. Pitch gages aren't all that expensive, and Chinese copies are available. I've had my Starrett pitch gages for years, think one of the less expensive is about $15 - $20. Kept dry, they last forever.
Google metalworking.net, go to the dropbox. More information than you really want, but I do remember seeing some fairly comprehensive info on thread forms. But like any public and open dropbox, there's also a lot of stuff not even of a general interest except the poster. You might have to go into the retired files, they're at the top of the list, but searching there is going to take a lot of time, there are a lot of files and a lot of them don't say what they are. Format is either pdf or jpg for the most part. But without knowing what it's used for, pretty hard to narrow down possibilities. OR, google groups, rec.crafts.metalworking, probably someone there that has the identical machine to yours. Be ready for the slamming of any machine not made in the US, shit happens.

"We're lending money we don't have to kids who have no hope in ever paying it back, to train them for jobs that don't exist" - he hit the nail right on the head there. That's the American college system in a nutshell.
One thing they didn't expand on, and kind of got wrong tho. It's not just $1-trillion in student loans. It's $1-trillion in defaulted student loans. Meaning they aren't being paid back and likely never will. Because the students that took those loans simply can't afford to pay them back. The total amount of student loans is much higher.
lol, invading West Virginia would not go real far. I could not imagine trying to take gear over some of those mountains. Forget it in the winter....

That comment about the leadscrew not being a type of thread narrows things down a bit, so in that case, it's definitely an ACME screw, cheers!
It's a desktop CNC machine for cutting wood and aluminium etc, basically a computer-controlled milling and cutting machine, it's often referred to as the '3020T'. There's like a hundred variants of it though, all with the same name, which really helps. I was just looking for some close-up photos I took of the thread to show to someone, was going to post it here but can't find the bloody thing, looks like I must have wiped it.

I thought he was being pretty square with his facts. Then he goes on to the other good paying jobs that are open, but without qualified applicants to fill them. There used to be a time when they had apprenticeships, which was a cost to the companies that offered them. Even before I retired, it had been some years since the company had started even one apprentice, their thought was they could hire journeymen and not have to train anyone. Okay, that worked for a while, but with nobody training, there weren't new people with the skills. And those with the skills became pretty expensive, as they became scarce, that should have been easy to foresee. Some of those skills are now almost extinct, and if you find someone with them, you might think you're paying a lawyer if you need those skills. So be it. Stupidity is it's own reward. Doric.

That you are an ass doesn't need confirmation, JUNIOR. OR, I'm five years older than you, retired for almost nineteen years, comfortable with what I have. I also have a twelfth grade education, then 44 years in machining in it's different phases. Let's not equate education and intelligence, they are completely different. The real education begins when you leave school. Intelligence determines if you learn anything when you have to start to think. But, I also have exactly three bills each month, my utilities, my phone, (non-cell) and my Credit card, which I think has about $30 on it this month. No mortgage, I own the place, no car payment, I paid cash. Have fun chasing the other rats if it makes you happy, just don't think you know more than anyone on here, you don't. Earning money to me meant machining gears for tractors, anywhere from fifteen to forty each and every hour. You have no idea what work is. You've never done any. Doric. If you truly wished to become a PI, have the ambition to do what is required, meet the criterion set down for everyone applying for a PI license and have what it takes to be one, then, yes, you can become a PI. To be honest, I don't even know if you are a US citizen. If you are not, then you would have to become one before you could even consider the rest.
I have no worries when it comes to my local Law Enforcement Officers. I grew up with some of them, they were fathers and mothers of close friends. They have always been there when I needed them. Even at the moment of my greatest loss. I don't know where you live or what the LEO's are like but have you ever tried to get to know them? Sat down and had coffee with them? They are people just like you. I won't say they are all good. Every barrel has a bad apple or two. Do you honestly believe that everyone at your place of employment is an angel?

An army can try and invade NY but they might find it harder than they think. Although they did away with colors and alert level a while back the City and County of New York remains at red and remainder of the the State of New York remains one step below at orange. The NYPD alone is better equipped and prepared, not to mention larger, than the standing armies of some countries. Toss in the New York State Troopers, the New York Guard, the National Guard, and the Reservists and it adds up pretty quick.

Just so you know, that picture of me with the chainsaw was taken on a day when I was trimming tree limbs on someone's property... It's literally the only digital picture of me that exists. If I had known I was going to be evaluated on the size of my chainsaw I would have went into the garage behind me and gotten a much larger one... or an axe or sledge, just for appearances sake. Fact is I could rather easily dismember a body pretty quickly with the one in the picture. Would be more sensible to freeze the body first and also use a sawzall, if that were the task I was getting paid for.

How is it Reagan's fault that state hospitals all over the country were in shutdown mode before he was ever elected to anything outside of a movie?
Nixon tried to undo what Johnson/Congress/House did when medicaid passed (1965) and excluded the mentally ill. The bill offered states incentives to move people out of the state hospitals and into nursing homes.
In 1965 Reagan had just finished trying to get Barry Goldwater elected and wrote his autobiography..... Yes he was active in politics, but had no pull at all in them.
It never seems to amaze me when someone writes an article like that, and doesn't have a clue.

Alas, one of them is true: the food does suck, but not in comparison to typical American food. In comparison to Italian, French, Spanish, Greek, Persian, Chinese, Indian, Argentinian, Mexican, Thai, Vietnamese, Tibetan (the list goes on), however, British food does suck. It sucks massively. Fortunately, like the Canadians (and many Americans), Brits know this and are not shy about importing every edible idea (and chef/cook) they can find. In fact, I personally believe that the exceptionally poor state of British cuisine was the guiding impetus behind the growth of the Empire. That and the exceptionally poor British weather. :)
Anyway, my own personal experience as a Brit in Texas...
How long did it take you to drive here from England?
Do y'all still speak Latin in England?
(Asked by the registrar at a Texan university): You know if you're not a US citizen you have to prove you can speak English, and we can't admit you until take the TOEFFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).
You drink your tea... gasps... HOT?
To be fair, many Brits believe some pretty unbelievable stuff about the US. And no one outside the borders seems to have the slightest notion what Canada is actually like.

Regards number 3, lol, well I hope you remembered to say Aluminium without that second "i" :-D
Funny stuff, and the American guy, Steve, who appears in the video posted above. Have to say I like his sense of humour, cause that's something the Americans often don't seem to get right when it comes to us Brits, I think most times they see our humour as belittling. But yup, it's fun to see an American prepared to laugh at himself, that's the way to do it, we laugh at ourselves all the time. Maybe the internet is helping, I think the Americans are starting to grasp the way our humour works - they've got us sussed now :-P

Yeah, sometimes it takes a while before a yank will figure out that when you take a snobbish tone it's almost always meant to be SELF-mocking. I mean, c'mon. in a single generation, you go from being an empire that covers 3/5 of the world to a 95.000 sq mile island, from "The sun never sets on the British Empire" to "Sun? What sun?", you either learn to laugh at yourself or give in to hopeless alcoholism. Or both. :D Besides, if we didn't have the yanks to take the pressure off, everyone in the world would still be hating on us. As it is, everyone just laughs at us. As they should! :D
Edit: Oh, yeah. Aluminum. I had already learned to speak Texan. I used to have to "translate" for my mother all the time. I speak in several different distinct accents, and people who are used to my BBC generic get quite a shock when they hear me talking with the family. Of course, when I meet English people, they usually say, "You don't have much of an accent left." But I suppose I'll get a chance to practice: I'm visiting the UK for the first time in 30 years next month.

"@DoricYeah, well if you make it back through the weeds I have a question that's right up your street from the sounds of it. I need to know if there's an easy way to tell what specification of screw a CNC machine uses, short of dismantling the thing and sending off the screw. It's easy enough to do but I don't want to screw-up the precision until I've used it to cut parts needed to extend it."
Micrometers and thread pitch gage. Unless it's a ball screw, then entirely different methods are called for, and equipment I don't have. You don't say what kind of screw, as in use in the machine, so I have to assume lead screw and saying CNC would mean ball screw. Also if it's a lead screw, and not a ball screw, you have to see the end to make sure if it's single or double lead, meaning a thread pitch gage would say it's for an example, 10 TPI and in reality it's 5 TPI double lead. A single starting point on the end, single lead, two starting points, double lead. Also could be right hand thread or left hand. Chinese, my guess is it's probably in inches, not metric, if not a ball screw, Acme thread form, 7.5 degrees on either side of the thread. If made for the UK market specifically, maybe something similar to an Acme, or could be 55 degree whitworth. Standard SAE thread form in the US is 60 degree thread. If you can find a copy of Machinery's handbook, specifications for every thread you can think of would be in it, but it's a US publication and quite expensive. Which printing you might find makes no difference, thread forms do not change with time, new ones are added, the old stay the same. If you don't have inch measuring instruments, the conversion is simple, 1 inch equals 25.4 mm and that's not approximate, it's exact.
If you get lucky, and it's an Acme thread, that's available like threaded rod is, not cheap, until you try doing it yourself, then it's really cheap if there's any length to it. Just buy it long enough all you have to do is machine the ends. Threading long rod isn't something I really enjoy doing, and it usually requires a follow rest, making it an even worse PITA.
