Don't know if you have this in America, but not too long ago the whole nation was getting harrassed by nuisance phone calls (around 6 fucking times a day), from solicitors (lawyers) trying to sell services claiming they could write-off a loan. The idea, as far as I can tell, was that if they can prove that the loan you were given was too large to be realistic for your circumstances at the time, and therefore your ability to pay, they can write-off your loan.
Can't remember what it was called, but due to the intense amount of people that were doing it, I suppose there might have been something in it.
