Subject: Great to fill out a crowd scene -- but not on the cheap -- at least not here

They've got some nice-looking low-poly people models of all sorts & styles.  These would be great for populating one of Stonemason's city scenes -- or others.  But, unfortunately, they expect to be *paid* for them.  *sigh*  Haven't these folks ever heard of the 3D altruistic ideal?

Hey wasn't this Marlin Studios at one time or another place like them? Yes I know not cheap at all.

I'm not sure about the company name -- it's possible.

I've had an interest for some time in being able to create crowd scenes in various situations.  It's great to have a beautiful cityscape: but the city usually looks deserted...........like a ghost town.

There are products in the Marketplace which help with this -- but in order to provide the look & feel of a crowded, busy downtown area or a shopping mall, etc. -- I'd think that these types of low-poly human models would be the way to go.  However: they're kind of pricey for the purpose.  Or at least they're pricey when all that I'm seeking to do is to create pretty pictures with them.  Now if I was going to use them to make money, then it'd be a different story.  But for pure hobby purposes, it's probably not worth the cash to me.

I'm still tempted by them anyway.

There are some poseable low-poly figures in the MP which I intend to buy.  But I'd also like to see someone come up with a collection of static, low-poly human models dressed in various ways -- specifically for the purpose of providing realistic background to public scenes.

I only knew of the AZL crowd in the MP. But you're right doing a city scene looks funny with no people.

Note that those meshes aren't rigged as far as I can tell (meaning they are not poseable).  Few of the poses shown are really appropriate to "city people walking around", although I suppose they'd be fine for people waiting at a bus stop or street crossing.

Yes, I understand that they are purely static, and that they can't be posed without some additional work in a modeling app.  But that's alright -- I could come up with ways to use them.

Additional walking figures would be helpful, though.

XENOPHONZ,

Yes, these are very well done and pretty flexible.  I'm recommending them to users of my plugin who are looking for high-quality, low-res Poser figures for arch-viz and so forth.  Can't wait for Predatron's matching female version of the product!

$24.95 is an easier pill to swallow than $80 bucks. I'll have to look into these figures by Predatron.

Yes, I am looking forward to the female version, too.  Hopefully he'll do a low-poly set like this with children as well.  Great for crowd scenes & backgrounds.

Have you tried to pose your figures and then billboard them. Or maybe do a few characters at a time in layers.

ISTR dosch has a similar set, for those with even more $$$.

see if this will help.

That method works...sometimes.  For one-off static images.

The problem is when you are dealing with the same scene from a few different angles (say doing a strip like some of us do) or decide to significantly change the angle of the image.  You have to re-render all the flat people to take the new angle into account.

Lo-rez 3D is much more flexible.  I wish more people created them because I suspect there's a significant market.

I know. when I used that method for Sgt.Rock, there were a few secenes where I had that very problem- but at the time, it was the only solution I had available.

There's a couple of free people here. Don't know the poly-count but, some of them would be good for static backgrounds. NOTE: You DO NOT have to install the toolbar to download!
Hope this helps.

Geralday had a few low poly Poser figures in his downloads.

I thought that dozens of P4 figures could be put in a scene without having a problem. There's also the P2 and P3 figures, though there isn't much clothing for them and Wardrobe Wizard doesn't support them.

Thanks for the suggestions and the links posted, everyone.

I've got AZL's Crowd Kit product -- which is basically a commercial version of billboarding.  It works, as the billboarding method also works -- within limits (as has already been pointed out).

From what I've seen, the most flexible, all-around solution involves using low-poly figures.  And yes, I agree with Keith that I wish that there were more such products available.  They would definitely have their uses.

As it is -- until Predatron's product -- to fill out a crowd scene with posable figures usually involved making use of the various low-poly Poser models.  But those figures have their limitations, too.  They can't be used for much of anything except for very distant renders, without their obvious "faceless dummy" aspect becoming visible.

Predatron's product will help.  And I do intend to buy it.

So... what would a poser figure that had >2600 polys, and took unimesh Poses and mapping be worth?

I'm planning a set of second skins outfits for him that would also work on other unimesh texture compatable figures.

If I ever get a working computer again, he'll also have most of the morphs you'll find in RRM3.
