That method works...sometimes. For one-off static images.
The problem is when you are dealing with the same scene from a few different angles (say doing a strip like some of us do) or decide to significantly change the angle of the image. You have to re-render all the flat people to take the new angle into account.
Lo-rez 3D is much more flexible. I wish more people created them because I suspect there's a significant market.
