Subject: My copyright notice

Garlor ( ) posted Fri, 26 October 2007 at 11:46 AM · edited Fri, 06 March 2026 at 10:34 PM

I put that notice on my pics to remind those who would consider taking my work for reposting  or resale. Taking pics is my way of earning a living and I do post images which sometimes are part of my stock library. I dont mind sharing my pics on this site but would certainly object if someone else  made money from my pics. In fact i would do more than object I would send them an invoice !

I see that **Garlor** has reminded us about,

My copyright notice ... on my pics to remind ...

Have you considered (or evaluated) using the Digimarc "MyPictureMarc" to
tag and protect your images?

I don't use the product, but I am curious about it.

Do you think it would be effective; cost effective, ... ?

Can anyone else comment?

Thanks

I highly suggest using your website address as a watermark. If someone steals your work and posts it somewhere, other viewers will see the watermark and check out you website. p.s. copyright notices get ignored alot which is why you should use a watermark.

Question the question. Answer the question. Question the answer...

I wish I knew what I was gonna say :oP

Thanks for the ideas, I do need to look more carefully at this potential problem.

We had a discussion regarding the Digimarc product here a while back....
One of the problems with it is...it does NOT prevent ripping, It merely confirms ownership.

So, because the watermark is not visible....folks will be even more tempted to rip...then it's up to you to chase them down. Pretty much like what we are faced with now....
The tracking concept is helpful....although I don't know how frequently they "spider" to search for the images.

As an aside, If I recall correctly...someone here attempted to defeat the digital w/m as a test...I do not remember if they were successful or not.

@Garlor....it is NOT a "potential" problem....it is a REAL problem....

In youth, we learn....with age, we understand.

What I would like is a program to sticks a tracker on your pic and sends notification when it's print screened, right clicked or posted on the net...

Is that possible to do?

Anything is possible. The question is has it been done yet. The problem I see with that is once the image is on your monitor, you have effectively downloaded it. A screencapture is mearly a formality at that point. Having it posted elsewhere on the net, that would be a really useful feature.

I see that PeeWee05 was asking for,

a program to sticks a tracker on your pic and sends notification when

Such a program (we call it a web browser) could be written -- it could even
be written so that the notification could not be turned off, bypassed, etc.

But here's the problem ... how would you ensure that the browser with that
control feature would replace every copy of every web browser already
written, distributed, and already in the PCs of millions of computer users?

How would you do that ... and make it stick?

After all, not even Bill Gates could get rid of Netscape.

SO maybe just the right clicking and reposting?

I don't know how to do it!!! Otherwise I'd have done it by now and be rich!!!

I see that PeeWee05 is still curious about copyright protection and asked,

maybe just the right clicking

A javascript could open a warning or even prevent right-click -> Save As.
However, it is trivial to overcome such 'protections'.  IOW, you could do
that, but you shouldn't be surprised when you find that it was ineffective.

and reposting

You can't prevent or control that at all.  OTOH, with Digimarc, you can
track the violations.

Visible watermarks and low res images might be a partial deterrent.

The real problem is the crooks ... and their low moral standards.

I know of a person who asked an artist for a copy of her web portfolio
for his personal use ... and then downloaded the portfolio zip file to an
eMail list.  Even after he was convicted of the violation, he had the nerve
to complain that she had no right to prosecute him -- I think he doesn't
'believe' in copyright laws.  He was even surprised when he was ejected
from a convention where she was exhibiting -- it seems that he doesn't
understand an order of protection either, ...

Do you get the picture?

I put a transparent watermark on a couple of my photgraphs uploaded here and got a few people bitching about it in comments.  Personally, I think it's worth it for the protection and I'm going to start watermarking again.  And comments complaining about it can be deleted.

I note that Kendra said that she,

put a transparent watermark on ... photgraphs ... got a few people
bitching about it in comments

You should get them to justify their position ... before deleting their
comments.  LOL ... and keep a list of the complainers too.

In addition Kendra also said,

"Scotch and co-workers don't mix..."

Of course not ... Single Malt Scotch should always be served neat.

Their position consisted of the fact that they didn't like the "mess" .

:)  Which is why I hide my good scotch from alcoholic friends who would be likely to mix it with something cola.  (can you imagine!?!)

I noticed that Kendra answered my question about objections to watermarks,

Their position consisted of the fact that they didn't like the "mess" .

In order to highlight that false position, here are some equally fuzzy ideas ...

(1) [When I was a lad,] "We never locked our doors."

(2) (While I was 'lost' in an unfamiliar part of Baltimore, MD) As I saw a
homeless person approaching on the nearby sidewalk, I locked the car
doors.  One of my passengers said, "They don't like it when you lock
your doors like that."

(3) I drive a section of a bad road in my neighborhood at the legal speed
limit and get some hostility and aggression from other drivers.  e.g., In 15
the years of living here, I have been illegally passed at least 1000 times.
While discussing this ongoing situation with a neighbor, she said,
"Have you considered the feelings of the drivers behind you?"
I have to wonder, does she mean that I need to get some lawbreaker's
permission to drive safely and at the posted legal speed limit?

Food for thought.

My position to Garlor, Kendra, and anyone else with a similar concern,
is that you should do what you need to do in order to protect your property
rights.  IMHO, you are free to ignore those who would compromise (or advise
you to compromise) your rights.

I had seen that **gradient** raised a good point whan he said,

As an aside, If I recall correctly...someone here attempted to
defeat the digital w/m as a test

gradient's question prompted me to ask Digimarc about this issue ...
Their response included the link to Digital Watermarking Guide.
