I think our wires crossed. Will have to accurately check out. Good one!
Sorry I did not grasp you question in the beginning--I am getting a bit worried about the way my brain is working the last few days, Must visit my doctor.Just feeling very old!
I am sure there was a zero edges that did what you want in Carrara 4--but does not seem to be working anywhere near the same in Carrara5. Easily done by taking into photoshop but must be away.

The attached screenshot is for a default terrain. Just add a custom layer, set up a multi channel for the shaderand use the screnshot settings for the distribution, in the transparency channel set transparency to 100% and no light interaction when completely transparent. Minimum altitude doesn't need to change anyway, just maximum.
That's an elegant solution, Patrick. Another idea would be to convert to vertex model, and knife off the bottom by making a boolean with a large cube. And another possible work-around....Anything Grooves includes a "zero is empty" checkbox. So you could set up the terrain in the Terrain Modeler, export the grayscale, apply that as texture to an Anything Grooves object, and turn on the clipping. I also came through Bryce, via more of a roundabout way, and I wasted a bunch of time looking for that oh-so-useful "clip" button in Carrara. Of course, Bryce had adjustable top and bottom clipping (even better!)

I need to know if Carrara has a way to clip a terrain made from an imported texture. I'm doing a terrain of some mountains on a flat surface, and I want to remove the flat part at the bottom and have onlt the mountains.
