Subject: Cloning my Poser Hard drive

jaxon101 ( ) posted Sun, 12 July 2026 at 7:37 AM ยท edited Fri, 24 July 2026 at 1:28 PM

Just finished new build and about to move 1.4 TB of 3D assets. Has anybody tried cloning a hard drive or just moving the drive to a new Box ?

Will it work?  Everything was on a NAS when it died. I was able to recover 90% and put on new drive took almost a week and I sure don't wish to do it all again

if I don't have too !!

Appreciate your help

Jaxon

I have been porting the same Poser installations from one device to another for over twenty years without any problems.  Every now and then, I've needed to reinstall something with missing bits or a bmp file that's spontaneously corrupted, things like that.  The Poser software itself has needed to be reinstalled now and then, usually for the registry.  But generally everything can be ported from one device to another safely.  All of my runtimes were even ported from Windows to Linux that way, with only the software itself requiring reinstallation for the new OS.

It's been safe for me, it has worked nicely, and cue a bunch of people hopping in to tell us I'm doing it the stupid way in 5, 4, 3....

Cage can be an opinionated jerk who posts without thinking.ย  He apologizes for this.ย  He's honestly not trying to be a turkeyhead.

Cage had some freebies, compatible with Poser 11 and below.ย  His Python scripts were saved at archive.org, along with the rest of the Morphography site, where they were hosted.

I'm going to give a go

I have a NAS as well, which holds among other things my complete collection of assets (zips, progs, install folders, bitmaps, photoshop stuff and other HDRI's).
From time to time, everything is synched using a batch file and Robocopy to an external hard drive, which is connected (electricity and USB) only during the synch process)

Same goes for my Poser projects and all runtimes: using a second external hard drive.

I've been using this script for at least 25 years and it never failed because it only relies on the shell that exists since... Dos 1.0 b0aCWKCA364Jiwwu63f01rf0wPrwPdpgKQwi4BLI.gif. No installation needed.
For what I know, at the time Robocopy was on NT Reskit (at the time of Windows NT3.5 or 4.0). But the last time I downloaded was from sourceforge.
If someone needs this tool, I can share, as long as the author's name remain in the batch file.

One thing that might help is a program called Checksum Compare.  It's freeware, and it lets you compare files and directories by either CRC or MD5 it generates.  It creates a list highlighted in green, red, and yellow for equal, different, or missing files.  It would be useful to use after copying your poser directories to compare the copy to the original to determine any corruption or missed files.  Also useful in data archiving and recovery.  I have been using it on recovering files from a corrupted 2TB for the last couple years.  It could still be a bit tedious, but a timesaver when all is said and done

The version I have is from Windows 7 days, and with deep nested directories where there may be similar file names it will generate some false fails - so on a runtime you may have to manually compare startin in lower directories rather than just the entire runtime.  (i.e. compare each subfolder of Props, then Poses, then characters, etc.)

Not sure if posting a direct link would be frowned upon... but here it is:
