Thread: To Sharpen or Not to Sharpen? | Forum: Photography
Onslow, I don't think I tried edge preserving smooth on this image, though I have tried it before. Sometimes that softens it a bit too much, even at just one. Before I resized the original down for posting, the needles sharpness that Jeroen was talking about was more obvious than in this smaller version. No, I have PSP 8. I didn't know that version 9 had a digital camera noise removal tool. Have you found it to be very successful?? I have a hard time, soemtimes, detecting the blue and purple fringing that I have read about before. But I have fiddled with an image for a couple of hours that I will be using for my next post. Hopefully, it will be some improvement over this image here. You don't know how much I appreciate y'all's help! Thanks so much!
Thread: To Sharpen or Not to Sharpen? | Forum: Photography
Oh my goodness, Jeroen, you have complicated things! :)) The images I posted so far were processed on a regular screen. I haven't tried to compare them on my LCD monitor yet. I suppose I ought to try processing an image on an LCD monitor and see what difference it makes. I can see what you mean about the needles now that you mention the contrast and hope I can curb my natural tendency to sharpen too much in the future. I was most impressed with your macro insect images. Is that using the macro setting on your digicam or do you use manual settings? btw, thanks for the welcome and suggestions. This has been most helpful today. :)

Thank you very kindly, 'cynlee' and 'tibet2004uk'. It is difficult to decide just when is 'too much'. Though I haven't tried to actually compare these images between home and work, I have noticed that the renderosity gallery images do look a bit different on my LCD screen at work. Yet another thing to consider, which computer I should use to process these images on. I'll try to tone down the sharpening just a tad and see what y'all think on future images. Thanks so much, also, for the link to the sharpening tutorial. I appreciate that. Maria

....very sorry about the double post. I just now learned that you cannot hit the post button and then real quick change your mind, hit the stop button and try the preview post button. (blush).

Thread: New UF tag image | Forum: Fractals
I've missed out on most of this since I haven't been around much, but I'll play along. I don't know if I saved the text file correctly, but I'll give it a shot. Fun idea to see this on the forum!

Thread: Memorial - for CavalierLady | Forum: Fractals
My heartfelt thanks to Nick and Barbara for this touching memorial! You have more than enough to keep you busy lately, and I thank you so much for the time and effort of putting this memorial together for me and the expression of love that has warmed my heart. And my eternal thanks to my kind friends who have posted such beautiful images in honor of Mike and myself! Your thoughts and prayers over the past year while Mike was so sick, and the outpouring of sympathy these last three weeks have help to sustain me and ease the pain. I'm truly honored to be part of such a wonderful community, and I wish that this comradery, friendship, and love could be felt and experienced in the world outside of this little part of cyber-world, for it certainly would make the world a better place. You've certainly made my world better by knowing you, being inspired by your artwork here, and getting to know some of you. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for these sweet gestures of support and condolence. You'll never know how it has touched me. You all will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this wonderful Renderosity community. With love and gratitude.... Maria
Thread: Apo and UF | Forum: Fractals
That's odd. I generally copy and paste before saving. Try this. Fist make sure that you have clicked on options in UF and updated all the public formulas. Then try to right click on the flame and click then on 'save as upr'. Open UF and either right click and paste, or use the paste icon in the toolbar. UF will show you a window that says it is looking for a possible match, ... be patient a moment and allow it to find the sdc+enr-flame-a in uf. Then click on 'use the formula selected above' and allow the flame to paste in. Then if it shows up right, click on save, to save the file within UF, or click on the icon for 'save parameters'. That's the way I do it. I'm sure Rick has explain further about how he does it. Good luck! Once you finally get it , you'll see it's a piece of cake. :)
Thread: Apo and UF | Forum: Fractals
Hi Mags.... once you exported a flame into UF, did you save them? You need to either save the fractal file, and/or the parameter for the file you exported. Then you should see that flame parameter when you click on the browse icon and find your flame folder, whatever you named it. UF can't open a flame from the apo program, you have to save it as a UF file to open it again in uf. Hope this helps. :)
Thread: Introducing the Fractal Window Weekly! | Forum: Fractals
Wonderful idea! This is an excellent alternative to the h20 and I'm all for it. I look forward to the updates and the other ideas that you have got cooking. I sincerely hope that everyone will enjoy it for what it is and not start picking it apart with too many questions, respecting the decisions for the images chosen for each week. Great idea, kudos to both of you, Nick and Barbara. You both have lives away from this computer and I'm sure that everyone is very grateful for the time and effort that you put into this digital fractal world here. Hopefully your projects in the future will be more pleasant ones, and the unpleasantness is over, for a while anyway. :)
Thread: Hot 20 suggestions | Forum: Fractals
There have been lots of creative ideas listed here. Ive not had a lot to say in the forum, and tried to avoid conflict whenever possible. But I can see that everyone here is really trying to be helpful in resolving the issue of the hot 20, which Im glad to see. Like Keith, I have to agree that this place is a community, and there will always be friendships and cross voting, its just human nature. But I also agree with him that this place is just a hobby. Its just for fun and not worth the time and effort if there is going to be constant strife. Those who are serious about their art have websites and those who are lucky enough to market their art in a way that creates some type of income probably dont have the time to flit from one website to another posting in places such as this. This place is just for fun. I think it a good idea to have some sort of showcase for what appears to be the best images of the week, even if these images are voted into that position. I often dont have time to peruse the entire gallery. I take spurts of commenting and voting, and then I take spurts where I dont comment or vote at all. When my time is limited, a quick glance at the h20 is sometimes all I have time for. A page of best images voted on by a panel will still cause, IMO, problems with some. Who is to be the judge and the very fact that a small panel of people would make these decisions might not be popular with some people. I have occasionally voted on some images in other galleries that have knocked my socks off and would be slightly disappointed not to be able to do that, though it wouldnt be the end of the world. I was glad to be able to vote on, say as an example, Rohis newest images, even though I dont post in that gallery and have no working knowledge of some of the programs he uses. I really liked the idea of only voting for a limited number of images per day. One vote only per day would seriously hamper ones ability to vote on images they thought were really outstanding, but perhaps just two or three per day, no matter how many galleries one visited. That would eliminate being able to vote on every other image that you viewed that day, and would make one have to really pause and think before hitting the vote button. Being able to disable votes from your images is a good idea as well. And by all means, disallow the v thing when commenting. I dont use it and think anonymity would be fairer and discourage cross voting. If the hot 20 is to be done away with, I agree that a page similar to the monthly challenges would be an excellent idea. I wouldnt mind at all seeing the artists name with each image, but a page of small thumbnails placed in random order, with no number 1 image, and if it were possible, the order of their random placement to be changed every time a new image was added to this page, would truly showcase these images, (even if they were still voted into this showcase page), and keep it truly random. I dont visit the most commented or most viewed pages of the different galleries, and it would not be any great loss to me if they were deleted. Ive seen and done so many things in the past year that make this all seem, in a way, so very trivial and just not that important. Those that know me, know what I mean. So I still have to smile at the suggestion to lighten up and enjoy Renderosity for what it is. :) Fractals are an important part of my life, or I wouldnt spend so much time trying to make them. They just arent the most important things in life. Its the things outside this computer monitor that are. :) For the most part, there is a wonderful sense of community here and we have all made a lot of friends here, and enjoy conversing back and forth with each other, and truly enjoy being able to view the diverse, unique and talented forms of art posted here. We try to be friendly, most of the time, and try to act like adults. Since this is my only presence on the internet, Ive truly enjoyed being able to be a part of this community, (without charge even!), as I have no web site, or other web presence, and truly hope that the moderators can come to a satisfying conclusion. Theyve got quite lot to chew on here and I applaud their efforts to keep things running as smoothly as possible. Maria
Thread: Opinions please! Gallery Guidelines... | Forum: Fractals
You hit the nail on the head, Encrypted! So what if it is not pure 100% fractal?? You will probably know the minute that you see a thumbnail, whether or not you are interested in clicking on it to see the full size image, right? So if an image isn't as "fractalian" as you prefer to look at, you'll probably just pass it by and go on to the next page of thumbnails. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to look at every single image in the fractal gallery, much less mixed medium, poser, terragen, bryce, photography, etc. etc. So if an image just doesn't trip your trigger, then go on till one interests you enough to view full size. Seems like a no-brainer to me, anyway. Like Paul and Matt said, it's not that earth-shakingly important. :))
Thread: Opinions please! Gallery Guidelines... | Forum: Fractals
My goodness, there so many different discussions here, it's hard to tell what's what anymore!! I agree with Marion's comments. I was happy with things before complaints brought these new restrictions. As to post processing, a touch of sharpening, color contrast, gamma correction, all these can take a nice image and turn it into a fabulous image. I don't agree that it is just to cover up an inadequate piece of art. Those who do not have ultra fractal and work with flames in PSP or PS like to create some kind of background if they don't want a plain black background. According to the new rules, the flame is focus of the image, and the background and/or framing only enhances the image. If artists are to be restricted and constricted, it seems to me to put a real damper on their enthusiasm, at least for posting here in the fractal gallery. No offense taken, Andreas. :) I deleted all the picture tube images from my gallery except for one. I enjoyed it for a while, but came to realize that the source of the tubes can't be verified, so I haven't used them lately. I'll abide by whatever rules y'all decide to make. If pixies and fairies and kittens aren't fractal, then I'll be posting more in MM and other galleries here at Renderosity, as it's really left a bitter taste in my mouth to see all this bickering going on. This used to be a much happier place. I have enough on my plate in my personal life without feeling like I am being stifled and can't place an image that I thought was 80 or 90% fractal in the gallery that has been my comfy home for over 2 years now. This hobby is one of the few things that brings me any pleasure these days, and it saddens me that things have changed so much. I'll go along quietly once the decisions are made, but I don't think it will be quite as much fun anymore. This gallery has been my cozy haven for so long and I am a tad uncomfortable at having to venture out into unknown territority. C'est la vie.
