Subject: Camera Insurance?

Hi folks...

I was wondering what y'all use for camera insurance.  Now that I have upgraded to the 30D and several lenses, plus other assorted goodies, it's time to think about insurance.

My insurance agent tells me that all my equipment can be added to my homeowner's insurance with the standard coverages for loss, theft, damage caused by fire or tornado, etc., etc.  Additionally, there is a policy one step higher, that after all items are itemized with serial numbers, etc. the insurance has no deductible, at a rate of around $1.25 per $100 of value.  But she said that Texas does not have a floater policy such as is described here:

I know that we had purchased a special policy years just for our restored antique automobile.  But she told me that she does not have anything specifically for digital camera equipment.  Is there nothing being offered anywhere that covers all potential risks, like tripping and falling in the river with camera in tow {{shudders at the very thought!!}}  I realize these things all very state by state, and apparently Tx is an odd duck about several insurance aspects, but wondered if something might be available that my agent isn't aware of.

Thanks..... Maria

I suspect each owner must check with his/her local agent to see the policies. I would assume homeowners would cover cameras...but...and that is a real but...sometimes it has to do with when and how the stuff(any stuff) is used and circumstances of the event causing loss.  I should check this out right away.

Thanks so much for bringing up the subject.  The loss had not entered my mind!   At the house, I "assume" robbery would be covered..but in the field..who knows.    I have to find out from my agent and see what the policies really are.          TomDart.

Yes it is a good thing to think about and you may find you get better coverage with less potential problems with a specialist Camera insurance, where you can get coverage from the non pro to pro and also get things like public liability cover..

Thanks, folks.
Something specialist to cover what might happen in the field would have been preferable, but I don't think that is going to be available in this area.  Homeowner's insurance may have to be the way to go, unless I can find something better.
Thanks for the replies.

Self insure..that means you carry the risk. And you try to put away the same amount as you would have paid for the policy each month. Then it builds into a replacement fund.
Most insurance companies charge way too much and refuse home claims unless you have excessive security which again will cost you.
I worked in the insurance business and know how bad companies are when it comes too paying out.

Thanks for that tip, even if it is not very reassuring.  One would hope your insurance company would come through for you, but then I suppose there are some that provide less than stellar results.

Good afternoon! In fact, insurance services are very diverse, but in my opinion, they are all aimed at minimizing unpleasant surprises that may arise to us in various situations. For example, when I was planning a trip to South Korea, I knew that south korea travel insurance would guarantee my free and timely medical care at the expense of the insurance company, so I took out insurance at the best price on a reliable online website. The price depends on the age of the insured and the duration of the insurance, so first I chose a tariff and looked at the list of insured events. This helped me make the right choice.
