Thanks so much for your reply!! I didn't know if this forum was for asking questions, or posting images. I have printed out the parkenet.org tutorial. Thanks - I will study it. And thanks, also, for the tip about the switch - I will play around with that, too. But wouldn't you know things get busy when I have a new "toy". Had to run to the city on business, and stopped at a book store, but nothing on Ultra Fractal. Found one book written by Mandelbrot himself, but you'd have to be a ph.d. to read it!! Any books on Ultra Fractal I could buy??? I don't have anything to show (I wouldn't show that first mess I made to my dog!). Hopefully, someday, I will have something worth showing, if I ever get the free time to study and click. Thanks, guys and gals. Kind of you to answer. :)
Thread: Frustating Copy and Paste Problem!!!! | Forum: Fractals
Thanks ever so much. I knew it was something really simple - turns out it was something really stupid. My database was not downloaded into the correct folder!!! Now that it is in the formula folder, I will take a look at the file extensions and see if any of them need to be moved into the correct subfolder. Thanks for that tip! Now I can open these up and try to learn how they were made. Thanks also for the tip on other sites to get files from, that's even better. Sorry to bother you guys - I'm such a greenhorn here - but I really! appreciate your time!! Thanks Stotty - your message clinched it!!
Thread: ?-Viewers' Responses = Your Own?-? | Forum: Fractals
Very interesting topic. As a newbie who has had UF for 30 days, and will be regestering it today, these forums are our only link to the world of other fractalers. I was thinking of posting some of my "better" ones, but hestitate after another thread discussed that some are not interested in just looking at more images.
I have posted several images at another email list I belong to, and I have had only a couple of comments to my images. I have noticed that there are half a dozen or so regulars who generally correspond frequently on each other's work, and many images are not commented on at all.
Surely, we all would like to receive some gratification for our work, that's only natural and very human. We know when we have created something that is "good". At the time I created something, I may think it is my best one yet. I might post it somewhere, and after receiving no comment, wonder to myself, well, maybe it was not that good, after all. And after a month, I can look back and see which images are better than others. Hopefully, we are learning and progressing as we explore new techniques, and delve for a while on certain types of images, color, and design. Often, feedback from others is the only way that we have of knowing if we are learning and creating artful images that others enjoy. I personally do not "know" anyone who has UF, so conversing via the internet, is the only way to learn. Having one's spouse or family member offer a compliment is, of course, nice. But having other fractalers who can offer suggestions and answer questions on how to accomplish a certain task, is the most helpful of all as we try to improve our skills. I am very grateful to the help that has been offered t me when I have been stumped on a problem.
I look at the web sites of the better known fractalers, and sigh deeply, thinking I will never achieve such beauty, and wonder if I should just forget this project. But after an hour or so, I am back at the computer because I just have to make another one. It is so addictive at this point. Perhaps after a while, it won't consume all my time and thoughts, lol. I have looked at other postings, and thought, no I just don't care for that one. We have a feel for what we like to create, and if I feel comfortable with an image, and I think it's my best one to date, then that, in itself, might be considered justification enough. I don't care for Picasso, but it's perfectly allright that millions of others do. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some climb Mt. Everest just because it is there. So it is with this art. If others can enjoy it, as well, so much the better. It is your and my artistic expression. And the polite little "pat on the back" comments do add a deeply gratitfying and satisfying "warm fuzzy" feeling, knowing that someone took more than just a passing glance at our work, understanding the time and effort that went into a piece, even if it is not a Rembrandt, or bronze statue. It nurtures us and encourages to continue.
Just my two cents. Thanks for reading. :)
Thread: Why Fractals then? | Forum: Fractals
When I first got Ultra Fractal, I went straight to the bookstore, trying to find something on fractals or UF. What I found was a huge book by Mandelbrot himself that was way above my level of understanding. But I found a small paperback called "Fractal Geometry". I don't have the author's name, but you could check at Amazon or somewhere like that. It was very simply written so adults and children alike could understand, and gave histories on Mandelbroit, Benoit, Julia, and how fractal geometry is all around you in all the things you see everyday, as well, as how it is used in computing more things that you might realize. It was very interesting reading!! Perhaps that is what you are looking for, firefly.

LOL, that's why I didn't buy the book written by Mandelbrot himself! One would need several PHd's to understand it. :) This one was very easy to understand, filled with lots of black and white pictures of mandels, julias, and how they relate to the real world we live in.
Thread: Did you ever express your emotions in a fractal? | Forum: Fractals
I agree with both comments. I suppose we all develop a certain style in whatever arts or crafts we attempt, and that style shows through in many pieces. However, emotion can play into, not only the emotional response that you see when you create a fractal, and hope to convey to the viewer, but perhaps, also, the mindset and emotions you are feeling that day determine what kind of fractal you will create. Hard to concentrate when things are hectic and noisy. Or perhaps a darker tone shows through if you weren't in a bright and happy state of mind that day. Some times things really click and a fractal just blossoms very easily, and sometimes you have to work hard at it to achieve what you were after. At least it is for me.

I have never submitted anything for a challenge before, but I did an image a while back specifically about a Moody Blues song that might qualify.Thread: April challenge - Your favourite song | Forum: Challenge Arena
Thanks, dialyn and RimRunner! :)) I haven't fractaled in a few days... actually been looking thru some of the other galleries, which is how I happened here. So much great digital art work out there!
Thread: comment notification? | Forum: Fractals
Hi. I haven't received any notifications since this glitch showed up nearly a couple of weeks ago. None for image comments, forum postings, or new favs list postings. The option doesn't even seem to be on my edit home page anymore. Any suggestions?
Thread: Not getting the new-posting e-mails | Forum: Community Center
Hello... Me too. I haven't gotten any comment notifications in nearly two weeks now, nor new fav postings or forum postings. Seems that some folks are getting their mails just fine, but I don't even see the option to check on my home profile any more. Any suggestions??
Thread: comment notification? | Forum: Fractals
Thank you firefly. I contacted lady nimue in the admin forum and she said to give it a few days, while they iron out the bugs in the new server. I looked through profile yesterday, and seem to have everything in order, but I will check again. Thanks so much! :)
Thread: Voting on Gallery Uploads | Forum: Community Center
My first reaction when seeing this was that I enjoy being able to post three a day. But after reading and pondering, I must admit that 7 per week makes sense. For nearly a year, I never visited anything but the fractal gallery. Now I have begun to visit the main gallery and enjoy viewing the other galleries and seeing the diversity of art and the diversity of great, great talent here. But it is nearly impossible for someone with limited time to seeing all the postings in a 24 hour period. I also agree that being able to somehow filter out the galleries that you wouldn't want to see in the main gallery would make it easier on the viewer to see only what is of interest to him/her. (even if many of you would choose to filter out the fractal gallery, sniff, sniff...:D). I think this would be a wonderful idea. I myself have been guilty in the past of posting three variations of the same work, so I understand that viewpoint, even if at the time I thought it was a good idea. It's so easy to eagerly post one's latest three works, but a month later when going back, I might think it was a mistake to post that one because it really isn't that good, after all. Being limited to seven per week, would make me pick and choose very carefully which ones to post, thereby weeding out the chaff.
I don't think that less postings per day will get you more comments. Most folks know when they see the thumb if they want to view the full size image or not. Seeing 10 or 20 comments would probably make you more likely to want to see the full size image and all the comments. But not being able to view all the postings, I have bookmarked fav artists and also bookmarked the hot 20 for the bryce gallery, the vue gallery, and the mixed medium. So I am definitely for keeping the hot 20 for each category. Whether or not they all belong there as someone mentioned before, is not an issue with me. I know I am more likely to see what y'all thought was the best of the past week if I go to the hot 20, because more than likely, I have seeing it the first time due to the volume of posts. As far as the 'give it to me straight' issue, past experience in various lists and groups has taught me that this is best handled by personal emails and IM's. Human nature just tends to let things get out of hand if harsh comments are posted for all to see, and could be embarrassing for the artist. This way, constructive criticism can still be given without any offense and opening a pandora's box, so to speak, of unpleasant replies. For me anyway, I have received emails offering constructive criticism, and I appreciated the personal email approach. So there's my 2 1/2 cents worth. Thanks for the thought provoking discussion.

Thank you very much! I didn't even know, thanks to Tresamie for the IM informing me of this!
Thread: April challenge - Your favourite song | Forum: Challenge Arena
Thank you, thank you, thank you! What a surprise! Thanks to Tresamie for the IM informing me of this!! I get no ebot messages whatsoever from renderosity so it's kinda hard to keep up. Thinking about a new theme now, will post something shortly. Thanks ever so much for the votes. I appreciate it. Really, I was never one to win the stuffed toy at the fair, can't even win 3 bucks on the lottery, so if I am going to win something, it seems fitting to be for something I enjoy so much. Thanks everyone..:))).
Thread: May Challenge | Forum: Challenge Arena
Oh, sure, the garden will recover, but I will enjoy seeing all the digital wonders that bloom here this month. My flowers will come back later. At least we still have a home and a garden, others in tornado areas were not so lucky. Will enjoy seeing all your digital blossoms! :)
