Subject: Folding map?

egaeus ( ) posted Thu, 28 December 2006 at 9:01 AM · edited Fri, 13 March 2026 at 6:33 AM

Anyone know where I can find a free folding map (not a rolled up one like a treasure map)?

Mike

One that is spread out, but with the folds obvious.  I don't care what it's a map of.  I can change that.

If I can't find one, I can probably make one for you today.

Wow --that would be great!

Glad I could help

Well, stupid me.  Something kept bothering me about that model, and then I realized I had modeled the folds illogically.

I did a new one and it is off to you in another email, Mike.

I can be such a ninny some days.

Great Work! I would be very interested if you could email me your folding map. I tried to find your email address as mentioned above, but I have had no luck. I searched your, bio page. You have to understand, that I'm the type of guy when in a store looking for something. It's ususally right in front of me. Need I say more?

Your Gallery - Great Photo of yourself. I find it interesting your trademark image in the Forum and your Illustration of yourself in your gallery. I like to see how people like to be viewed with your Icon image in the forum. It doesn't say how a person thinks they look like nessasairly, as is says how they want others to think of them or think others view them. That can be a very deep subject that I won't get into. Its just that I find it very interesting.

If you can guide me to your email address, I will give you mine so I can get that great folding map. Thanks

rickymaveety ( ) posted Thu, 28 December 2006 at 12:47 PM

Sure, I'll send it to you.  Just go to the link at the top of the page that says "sitemail" and send a message to "rickymaveety" containing your email address.  Then I will email the zip file to you.

You're right ... deep subject.  It's hard to compare a photo and a small line art image, however.  I think that both are inexact representations of what I look like, but people could probably pick me out in a crowd using either one.

Thanks very much, I guess you could say I miss the obvious, and see the unobvious.

rickymaveety ( ) posted Thu, 28 December 2006 at 1:22 PM

No problem.

Anyone else wants it, just IM me and I'll send it out.  Maybe someone will host it in their freebies?  Since I don't have a place at the moment.

rickymaveety, this is great! Can I ask you about the UV mapping? I'm just starting out with mapping objects and I wondered if you UV mapped it first, then created the "folds"? I'm also IMing you because I'd love to have a copy of this.

rickymaveety ( ) posted Thu, 28 December 2006 at 8:13 PM

No, I modeled it first and then mapped it.  Because it was modeled using lofts from three lines all the same size, I figured it would come out more or less rectangular, and it did.  The variation wasn't enough to matter when I planar mapped it.

I modeled it in Rhino (because that's all I know at the moment) if that matters to anyone.  I will send you the map and other files tonight.

By the way, this is the way it came out with the folds corrected so it folds together logically.

Oh, and PS everyone, don't forget to include an email address where you want me to send the files.

Nice work !

I can never fold a real map back the way it orginally was folded, BTW.  Those National Geographic ones are always badly re-folded in my house....

How do you email folks now?
I would like a copy but can't find your email. Used to be in the profile.

I don't think it is anymore.  I would suggest that you go up to the sitemail link and then just IM me, rickymaveety, and tell me you want a copy and put your email address in the IM.  I will email you the model as soon as I have the address.
