Description

Here's something a bit different from me.. If you're not aware of it yet, the astronomy community was rocked last week by the discovery of seven Earth-sized planets orbiting a red dwarf star approximately 40 light-years away. Three of those planets are in the 'habitable zone' where the conditions are right for liquid water to exist - one of the prime requirements for life as we know it. This is a HUGE discovery. Check it out at NASA One of the many amazing things about this system is that all 7 of these planets orbit their star within a distance less than the distance from our own sun to the planet Mercury! The star - named Trappist 1 - is tiny for a star; only a little larger than Jupiter. Standing on the surface of any of the planets you would be able to see the other 6 planets - some would appear larger than the moon. If you stood on the surface of Trappist 1e (the view I've imagined here), there would be about 200 times less light than a sunny day on Earth. But since the planets are so close there would be enough energy from the star to keep you warm. The dim light would have a salmon color. I've tried to imagine the view if you were standing on Trappist 1e, one of the habitable zone planets. The foreground was done in Vue 10, the star was painted in Photoshop as was the distant starfield. The planets are from Angel's (Savage Dragon) Planets package at ShareCG. She has 7 planets in this package - very prophetic, Angel! How did you know? LOL I hope you enjoy my little detour into the wonders of our universe - I had fun putting this together. Thanks for all your great comments on my latest T.N.A. page!

That's cool and exciting stuff Rod - despite the fact that it would take us some 40 years to get there IF we could travel there at the speed of light. Being a life-long Trekker, I hope that one day it WILL be possible. I only wish it were in MY lifetime. I very much like your imagined view. Cool work.

Now if your girls could just figure out how wormholes work there might be a slight chance of humanity surviving a bit longer! :)

Outstanding concept and render!

It seems like such a cool system--even if we can't get there, I hope we can get some good imaging of the planets eventually! It would be awesome if they looked like this :D

This is so incredibly cool, Rod! I did not see this news and I'm very happy you shared it with us here. Talk about a grand design in the close proximity orbits of these planets in relation to their brown dwarf star. Truly, truly amazing. Makes me think about that movie Knowing in which Nicolas Cage as a professor speculates with his students whether the universe makes some kind of sense or whether "shit just happens". Totally excellent work with this scene too!!!! Very well done, my friend!

Sweet work Rod! Actually, use the wormholes to send the politicians there!

What? And have the aliens declare war on us for such a heinous act? Sheesh! 😁

I've been following this too, it's pretty cool yes? Trappist-1 is an M class star (Red Dwarf) slightly bigger than Jupiter with 0.08X the suns mass. The whole system would fit inside the orbit of mercury, and all of the planets would be visible in the sky. From Trappist-1f planets e and g would look a bit bigger than our moon. All are most likely tidally locked so they are probably 'eyeball planets' with the dark side and the terminator ice covered. This might not be the case if they have deep oceans, that would drive winds that would distribute the temperatures around more. As many as 4 of them could hold liquid water. Sunlight would be salmon colored. Oceans would thus look deep purple or wine colored. Any native plantlife would have very dark colored leaves, almost black.

These factoids have been brought to you by Madbat's Center Of Astronomical Studies™

Excellent work. And what a sight this place must be. But let's be fair, Tappist-1 does squeak in as a red dwarf not a brown dwarf. It's got that whole nuclear fusion thing going for it. Well just barely anyways. Actually thinking what the seen would be like on any Tappist planet brings back memories of 'Rocket Robin Hood' from its Ralph Bakshi days

It's beyond amazing stuff, Rod. I always imagined seeing a world filling up a bit more of the sky like you see in Star Trek TOS. But seeing six worlds plus the dwarf all at once would be spectacular. A very, very cool imagining!

well I came back for one more. This is really beautifully done, Rod. Not only for the impact of that big ball of fire against all the beautiful purples (and browns of the landscape), but the sheer clarity of the spheres, and how they circle the star. You did a terrific job. And yes, it's a great discovery. In an age when science has all but disappeared in our country---no thanks to our illustrious president and his oh-so caring advisors---it's wonderful when a big discovery like this reminds us of the wonders right outside our windows. (And I really was impressed with how you mixed that beautiful model, in tonight's upload, with that photo; and how well she was done, herself.) Let me say again how much I wish that you totally conquer the medical stuff you're dealing with now, and that you come out of the procedures both strong, replenished, and 100% whole. (And, you'll get time off from work too.) I wish you all the best Rod! You deserve it...take great care, my friend.

Ohhhhh ... the setting for a new sci-fi series, ala Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover. The possibilities are delicious!

Awesome view and excellent speculative scene. We need hyperdrive and/or wormhole travel if we're ever going to see this expanding universe.
