Description

Having fun trying to figure out the probable history of our old cedar stump. The local landowner believes that the land we camp on here, during the summer, was originally logged sometime between 1900-1910. Here is one of two springboard slots cut by sawyers more than 100 years ago to fell the mighty cedar tree that at one time stood here. Old growth cedar trees of this diameter in Washington State grew to heights exceeding 200 feet...some to as much as 300 feet. By the way, all the green growth bushing out at the top of the stump are huckleberry bushes that have grown up through the slowly decaying core of the old tree.

Amazing how nature wants to reclaim her territory and let the huckleberry retake this ground. It really has an interesting past and must have been a massive tree. Well spotted to find these springboard slots. 😀

Good comprehensive narrative and quasi gothic capture of your favorite cedar, a venerable arboreal growth if there ever was one.

great capture and a living habitat for all kinds of critters and plant life. it is amazing how trees can recover from being cut down low on the trunk. there has been several in my neighborhood. when I cut down 3 trees I dug up all the roots or cut them
