Great stuff, Richard! The industrial mobilization during WWII is absolutely staggering to contemplate. Also? I've seen a documentary about the salvage yard of which you spoke. So many aircraft carcasses sitting in the sun.

Very interesting, when you think about it, this is incredible the amount of planes and ships that were made, during WWII, and Cold war, compared to today.

Wow! What a sight!

I wonder how many hours it took to build and assemble such a Fortress and how many of them where just taken down in just a few minutes - taking their crew with them..!

Sometimes i fire up the good old Microsoft Flightsimulator X and choose the B17G from A2A Simulations for a short flight. I've never seen a Simulation of the B17 so real like this.

Fantastic photo. Really illustrates mass production on a conveyor belt system. As for FurNose - I don't know how much time went into a B17, but a Liberty Ship took 21 days. Back then, the US was the armory for victory. Jap commander Yamamoto had studied in the US when young and told the Tojo regime Japan could never out-produce Japan. Nobody listened. The rest is history. Thanks for posting. Gives me a sense of pride. :-)

Always loved the 17 - a real beauty! And this is a great look into the history of this aircraft. They used to build B-25s here in Kansas City.
