Subject: Blender to .3ds?

shinyary2 ( ) posted Sun, 24 July 2005 at 8:39 PM · edited Thu, 12 February 2026 at 10:23 AM

I'm sure that this is much complained about, but I really need to make .3ds files with skeletal animations. Is there any way to do this with Blender or any other program you know of? Thanks! =)

max can do it blender has its own skeletal bone system, i dont think they are compatible. I tried rigging in max and found the blender way easier to do.

for some free stuff i made
and for almost daily fotos

Unfortunately I don't have the budget for $4,000, and I need the professional version because I may someday make money off of this. So... I should have said "free program". So there aren't any plugins or anything like that? =(

Blender came with a lot of import and export plugins, but .3ds isn't one of them. Without taking the time to research the issue, it's possible that there is a licensing problem (MAX asserts its patent in not allowing export to .3ds).

You might check to see if there are conversion programs out there between .3ds and another file format that Blender can export to. Blender can export to .lwo and .obj among others, and I know there are some conversion programs that exist. Maybe try the MAX forum and see if you can find one.

Got this link from blender3d.org. It has import and export scripts for .3ds.

You can find the last version (0.82) of 3ds importer at: http://members.iinet.net.au/~cpbarton/import-3ds_0-82.py It imports the objects WITH textures! :)
