I can't help much, but I do think they should add a message when you are in compatibility mode that says something like "undo compatibility mode."
I would guess you need to concentrate on that new graphics card. Do you have the latest drivers? Which card is it?
Thread: Show of Hands! VISTA and Bryce 6.1? just curious here...problems are much worse. | Forum: Bryce
But you should have a choice if the new machine replaces or adds to the system(s) you already have. Can't you install XP on your new system (and maybe Vista if the old system will support it)? You still have a legal copy of Vista that you can use at a later date when the drivers/apps mature.
Of course if it's an only system, you are stuck with Vista as it is.
WinXP has had a few years of non-beta development that Vista hasn't had yet. It seems the problems most are experiencing are in the graphics (OpenGL) area, which MS is "trying not to support." But there's too much pressure on them to support OGL, so it should get better.
If I bought a new computer, the first thing I would do would be to reformat and install winXP. But that's just me and my opinions.
Thread: Would you buy Bryce Pro? | Forum: Bryce
No. Better rendering and rendering speed. Improved materials and skies (and better editors for them.)
There are plenty of modeling programs out there, some free, like Blender and Wings3D, and some relatively inexpensive, like Silo, that can do the job.
It would be like comparing Vue's post processing to Photoshop. I feel Bryce should be the second-to-last or last (without post processing) phase of a rendered 3D project.
Take Carrera and Vue. Both have modeling capabilities, but neither are mentioned very often as modeling applications. Sure, if you want, you can create great looking models using those applications (including Bryce), but the time it takes compared to a dedicated modeling program doesn't make sense.
Just my opinion here and I'm sure there are others that would like an "all-in-one" application. But a shovel, rake, and hoe make sense too.
Thread: Model (OBJ) Importing Problems | Forum: Vue
forester,
Thanks for the response. I built the models for Brcye at the time with the intention of texturing them in Brcye, which I did. I found I had to glue the parts together in TS to get the ungroup capability in Bryce (to do the texturing.)
Yes, I did use the luvv plugin to export to obj.
I found out this morning I can load the .cob models (I saved a cob version of each model while in TS) into TS and export as a 3ds and Vue would import the model just fine.
I've migrated to Lightwave 9 since I wanted to use a 64 bit application on my x64 system and wasn't sure I wanted to invest more money into TS.

Thanks Mark,
I'll give that a try when I get back to the desktop (this little laptop isn't much good for any type of 3D graphics.). The patch download finished, so I'll try the patch first.
I've also had good luck using UVmapper Pro to rewrite the OBJ file. I have several programs that I can do this with. Just a little surprised these models I've used for a year or so in other applications failed.

Thread: Model (OBJ) Importing Problems | Forum: Vue
I watched the task manager and never saw the memory usage go above 600mb. And this happens with a blank scene -- fresh start of Vue.
Anyway, I will import it into Lightwave or Blender, make a small change, and then export it again as an obj and see what Vue does.
Thread: Ivy Generator | Forum: Bryce
I should clarify my above post. When I said click "grow" to stop, that's only if you want to stop before the grow function finishes, It will stop on it's own, but you may prefer to stop before all the branches finish (growing.)
Thread: Ivy Generator | Forum: Bryce
You can run the Ivy program "standalone", meaning, you don't have to import an obj model. Simply double click and then click grow. Click grow to stop (growing) and then click "birth".
This makes it a little easier to see your slider changes. Double click again to start a new "ivy". Export when you see something you like.
A little more information. The material file points to three .png images for young and adult leaves and the branch textures. You can edit the associated material file to use different images (textures).
When you import the obj into Bryce, you can ungroup it (make this easier by assigning a family color so you can select and group the obj easier.) With it ungrouped, check the three textures to see if you need to set the blend transparency and maybe change diffuse or ambiance settings.
Thread: Daz and copyright infringement | Forum: Bryce
Yes, a link to a web site does not seem to be appropriate credit, at least to me.
Would DAZ be so loose with their software products? I don't think so.
Movie ad TV credits are shown so fast you dont have time to read all the names. But they are there.
If you see an advertisement for a new movie starring "Joe Blow", you can be darn sure "Joe Blow" would also get credit in the movie as well as any other media advertisement.

Thread: Silo or Hexagon for a Wings3D user | Forum: 3D Modeling
I have both Hex2 and Silo 1.42 and would choose Silo. Browse through the public Beta 2 WIP thread at:
http://www.silo3d.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6806
and check out what some really good modelers are doing with Silo.
As mentioned, version 2 is free if you purchase 1.4 now (plus you can participate in the beta if you want.).
Thread: Photo as a sky | Forum: Bryce
I didn't put much time in this and it shows. However, with some tweaking it should look decent enough.
Anyway, what I attempted was to position a cube that stretches across the horizon and intersects the 2D plane and the ground (or water) plane. I then used a volume material to try to get the haze look.
The great thing about Bryce is the many different ways one can get some pretty good effects.
Thread: Photo as a sky | Forum: Bryce
.... a few more tips.
Before adding your sky photo to the 2D plane, set the plane to a nice bright material (one of the simple and fast, like red, green, or blue work nicely.)
Make sure the 2D plane is perpendicular to the camera. As you move it back to get it behind the other objects in your scene, that bright color is easier to see. You want the 2D plane to cover all the open sky area, but be as small as possible to accomplish that.
When you get the plane positioned, you can not change from the bright texture to the photo.
Even with the atmosphere off, the sun position is very important -- not just for your scene shadows, but for how bright your sky photo looks.
Some objects may cast shadows to your sky photo. Select those objects and turn off the "cast shadows" if you want to avoid that.
This same procedure can be used to make "camera filters" or to simulate something like rain. Here you would bring the plane up to the front and use transparency.
I like to make scenes without post processing, so I made my signature/copyright into a 2d plane object, which I can add to the render.
Thread: Poser 7 boxed version | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Quote - > Quote - Just to add to the rest I ordered a month ago and its still in process state. The box is worth getting as it has 2 disk and a full colour printed manual from what iv been told.
Absoutely right - 1 DVD for the application, 1 DVD for the High Stakes content and a printed manual, plus a few extras.
Actually, it's one DVD (app) and one CD (content.)
[edit] and the mentioned manual.
Thread: Photoshop or Paintshop Pro? | Forum: Photoshop
I finally switched to Photoshop after many years of using PhotoImpact. I got a good deal on PS via my purchase of a Wacom graphics tablet.
One thing I always fought when using PI, most all of the tutorials for 3D graphics applications seemed to use PS as the graphics editor, so I had to try to mimic the instructions in PI.
I guess the best advice is to take your time and ask a lot of questions. What are you going to use the program for? Photoshop may be an investment; Paintshop Pro may be a great value and save you some money.
Corel also bought Ulead (PhotoImpact) so there may be a merging of PP and PI ? Something to watch and consider.
