Subject: Zbrush 4R2 removes an imported object's unused vertices

Paloth ( ) posted Fri, 30 September 2011 at 1:46 PM · edited Sun, 07 June 2026 at 5:10 PM

I need to find a way to stop Zbrush 4R2 from automatically removing unused vertices when I import Poser figures. I'm making JCMs for a posed, welded figure that was exported from DS4. Its unused vertices must be retained to preserve the vertex count so that the morphs won't explode. Before Zbrush 4R2, you could import objects without having the program remove the unused vertices. I guess I’ll have to go back to version 4 to do this.

Does anyone know a way to stop 4R2 from removing used vertices on import?

Have you mentioned this in the zbrush forums? Anyone doing any 3d work and using zbrush will probably need to know this.

Yea you should report this, that would be aweful for poser artist, also does it just lower the subdivions or does it remove them? lowering sounds more normal to me!

I haven't joined the Zbrush forums but I probably should at this point.

There was a typo in my original post. The question should have been "Does anyone know a way to stop 4R2 from removing unused vertices on import?" Also, I was exporting from Daz Studio 3, not 4. I'll try it with Daz Studio 4 and see if it works.

Zbrush removing unused vertices isn't related to subdivisons, I think.

if it is v4 you have to export her and inport in pieces if I remember right or you get this

it happens in poser as well, poser 2010 is better with it so it seems so far

you cant import the whole head you have to break it down into parts

One of the cool things about Daz Studio 3 Pro was that you could export a welded figure, (posed or unposed) sculpt the object in Zbrush and then import your results as a full body morph. Morph Loader Pro would load the morph into the parts of the figure that were changed by the sculpt.

When exporting a posed figure for creating joint controlled morphs, I could only create usable morphs if I left the "remove unused vertices" box unchecked. Consequently the exported figures would have extra vertices serving as place holders for the divisions of the figure's parts. When loading the morph sculpt in DS3 Pro, these extra vertices would need to be there or the morph would explode.

I still haven't tested morph loader pro in DS4 Pro yet. (I'm not sure where they hid it.) I did, howerver, export a poser figure as an obj. from DS4 and when I loaded it in Zbrush 4R2 I didin't get the notice that unused vertices had been removed.

that is good to know

ZB does have a poser import.. are you using that?

Quote - ZB does have a poser import.. are you using that?

this is interesting and where is it?

I thought this went out with ZBrush 3.5 which you could install a poser import function to.

there after it would import OBJ without changing the size which was the problem before

Thee was a zplugin for it, but I don't see it in R2.

In my experience, you can't keep up with zbrush here, and have to hang out in the zbrush forums more.

that is for sure!

we dont even have a mod here

the top of th page says 3.5 release news

so I geuss we can do whatever the Hell we want here!

Honestly, I ALWAYS get my current info on zbrush at zcentral. There is far too much exclusive valuable info,  scripts, and such there, as well as all the answers to all the questions.

I started a thread about this in the zbrush forums here:

http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?161801-Wasn-t-there-a-poser-import-zscript-before-R2-I-don-t-seem-to-see-one-now.&p=897689#post897689

It sounds like it only changes objects with polys that have more than 4 sides, which should be a very small percent of poser used objects, based on a reply within hours of my question.

Marcus did reply that zbrush r2 does in fact remove verticies that don't have a an associated polygone, but that he will lookj into writing a zscript workaround for that.

(Its part of zbrush trying to cleanly import any mesh for work without errors or issues.)

He said in the mean time, anyone doing morphs on objects should use zb4, instead of 4 R2.

in case you use pml to load morphs, i have written a new exporter that does not write unused vertices.

Where can this be found? *
