Hi all, I'm still struggling with the destroyer a bit so decided to have a go at something a bit smaller to get my eye in with a ship. At the start of WW2 the royal navy were desperatly stuck for escort vessels and built a class of armed trawlers based on deep sea fishing hulls. They were even smaller than the Flower class corvettes at only 160ft long. In the early years they actually did atlantic convoys, although they were replaced at this. I started this off tonight and have about five hours done so far.

Great start on this one Brian.   I'm sure that they were a welcome sight to the men on the Victory ships. Well over 500 were made.

Thanks a million for the link, I didn't  know that there were any of these transports still in existance, never mind still going to sea. What a brilliant piece of living history to have preserved. The predessor of this class, the Liberty ships were turned out in huge numbers. I seem to remember that one was built in a record time of one week!
This is what I'm more or less aiming at:

The Liberty class had a very bad design flaw, in rough sea they would break in half! Something like 2,450 of the were made. Without them though, the British would have starved to death.

Wooohooo!  You are a modeling Jedi Master.  We need some of these for ships passing off the coast of Somalia.

Thanks guys! Yes indeed, the hull is a loft. I built the middle cross section curve first, then copied this and altered it to get close to the shape I wanted. This included rotating through 90 in plan view to get the ends done at the same time. To round out the stern I had to put in an extra curve. Then I "loose" lofted over the curves, with "record history" on. This allows you to alter the shape of the surface later by altering the section curves, rather than using the control points on the surface. Doing this it was easy to massage the hull into shape without introducing bulges. I had to do a tiny bit of point pulling at the back to make sure there was no crease, but thats about it. Here is a shot of the curves.

Using the same basic technique I built the ships boat this morning. Same deal exactly with the curves and the history. I put a bit of time into the details as this will be a focal point later.

I also finished off the hull, which was pretty tough. I had to build the rib that supports the prop shaft as a seperate part, and then blend it into the hull. I ended up doing this with a two rail sweep as the auto blend wasn't giving me the fair shape I needed. Then I did the prop and rudder to finish off.

I think I have a handle on what most of it does. I find thats one of the joys of modelling this kind of stuff, the way that your understanding of how stuff works grows as you model it. I have the depth charge throwers done now, which are beside the aft 20mm, all the guns at the correct scale and the foredeck finished off, complete with anchors. I thought it deserved a couple of big size renders at this stage.

Thanks Tom. I got a new PC on friday and have spent the weekend getting it up and running. I love getting a new machine, but the ass ache of getting it all running is a real drag. Anyway, got there in the end, and did a littl emodelling tonight. This is the close range anti-aircraft battery, twin Lewis machine guns dating from WW1. I had a Lewis drawn already for the gunner in the Seafox, so I just had to redo the barrell, build the mount and the butt stock. The gunner would have a strap around his back to help hold him in place when using it.

Here they are in situ. My new machine is a bog standard box from a discount supermarket with a quad core AMD Phenom II 2.8 Ghz proscessor and six gigs of RAM. I ran a test against my old machine with the whole trawler. The old macine took 8mins 2seconds for a 30 pass render in Flamingo nXt. The new one took 2mins 11seconds for the same render for an improvement in speed of 3.7 times. I'm a happy bunny now :)

Are you ever going to consider uv-mapping and texturing this magnificent model of yours...

Can you show at some point the wires and what does the poly mesh looks like on a small section of the boat..  just to get a feel for it...

  ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Smallworld ( ) posted Mon, 29 March 2010 at 3:02 AM

Hi Tom, yes I plan to UV map and texture the whole thing. One hitch is that I havn't got my UV Mapper pro to work on my new machine yet, but I'll get over that. Sure thing on yhe wires. Is there anything in particular that you want to see?

Had a spare few mins, sohere are a fewrenders with wires. This is the underside of the hull. I had to build the prop shaft housing as a seperate piece and then blend it into the hull. I built the hull as a half shell and then mirrored it. I always aim to have surfaces as simple as possible with as few control points as I can get away with.

Smallworld ( ) posted Mon, 29 March 2010 at 4:33 AM

This view shows half of the hull taken away. I had to offset the hull inwards to give a thickness to the walls along the deck. This has allowed me to make a compartment under the foredeck. I'm not sure if I will use it but its nice to have the option rather than building something later. I'll probably have a couple of doors from this area onto the deck later. All of the deck gear and superstructure are solids. They all project through the deck at the moment. I left them all too tall so I can reposition them vertically if needs be later. When I'm sure about the position, I'll trim off the lower bits using the deck.

Very clean modeling Brian...  Thank you for letting me see the inner works of the ship..
I wanted to see how dense the poly mesh is..  on a small section of the hull..  but I can now see it would not be so heavy...

I'm really trying to keep everything as simple as possible to keep the size down. All the handrails are square section for instance, rather than pipes. Its a pain to model but a lot smaller in resources and nobody will ever br able to tell I hope.
By the way, I just got my UV Mapper to work!
I'm not sure if I should split the hull into plates or do it with a bump map.

tom271 ( ) posted Mon, 29 March 2010 at 5:23 PM

Bump maps if done right look very convincing... Splitting that hull would increase poly weight

Nearly done with the modelling now, another evening should do it. Bridge more or less done, as well as lots of boxes and bits over the rest of the deck areas. I think its looking just about cluttered enough, and I'm running out of ideas for bits! I cut the drain holes in the hull (scuppers) and a couple of extra cranes too.
