Subject: Plant shader question for Mark Bremmer

Hi Mark, I was unable to find it through search, but I seem to recall a thread where you discussed a way to globally shade all the leaves of a plant. Maybe it was with a gradient. If I'm correct, would you mind linking to that or giving me the short version? Thanks.

Ha, there's been a few threads about that. Do you remember any more specifics? Stuff like what the end result was for? Or do you have a specific need in mind?

It might be faster to figure it out again than find the old thread!

I think that you basically used a gradient on the entire tree. I'm going for a shader where the outer leaves are gradually lighter than the inner leaves.

Hey Patrick and Mark,

I think I happened across the thread you're talking about on the DAZ forums last week.  I tried to pull it up with the DAZ forums  search engine using "*Bremmer" as author and "leaves" in the content field but couldn't find it.  If you remember some other words to add (like "gradient" or any other specifics) you might find it that way.  Good luck and thanks for all the help you guys always provide on the forums.

Cool. Glad you found it. 

However, specific to your request about fading from the interior to the exterior, here's a sample I just put together using Shoestring Shader's Proximity function. At the center of the tree I've placed a sphere but turned it's visibility off. The shader will still "see" it and invoke the function. The other little gradient tricks from the other thread can still be used to augment the variations though!

If you expand the image you can see how I set up the Shader Tree.

Cool, thanks. Looks like I'll be able to do what I want. This is for my Master Trees project that uses about 100 Carrara trees to build a single tree, so each Carrara tree is basically a small branch. I think this shading method will allow me add some more diversity and realism to the foliage. Every leaf the same is not very realistic.
