Subject: Carrara Pro 5 and Poser 7

I'm not yet at the stage where I'm building the Siren, but, I remember a problem I had in
trueSpace that I am determined NOT to have in Carrara. In tS, it was VERY hard to build
a model to the correct size for Poser figures since they always loaded VERY large and not
at the same size the tS models imported into Poser. Carrara, from what I have seen, DOES
have a scaling function when it imports. When I import a Poser figure, the default is 1 carrara
unit to 20 Poser units. If I want the Siren to load into Poser at the correct size, do I leave the
settings at the default? I use the Poser figures as guides when doing chairs, doors, hatches,
etc. tS would usually give me major headaches in this regard. :)

Not knowing what Siren is, why not import and check out?  You can always size in Carrara anyway or reimport adjusting the import sizing to your need.  It's always so darn simple to size things in Carrara I cant' see why it should ever be a problem anyway.

Remember that Poser 7 stuff really need to be directed back through Poser 6 or DAZ Studio as Carrara Poser importers will not be given the Poser7 sdk.

See attached.

I think the "or Daz Studio" should be deleted from my last post!

See the Poser7/Carrara5Pro thread!  Better informed info there.

I just went through the CarraraP7 thread. Interesting. Since I have Poser 4 through 7,
I shouldn't have a problem. I did load a complex scene into Carrara and it imported just
fine, and rendered VERY well indeed. I was just checking to see how it imported, and it
has no problems. You are right though. The best way to see how this will work is to import
a poser figure, load in the Siren's hull, size it and export. Then load into Poser and see if it's
the right size. SIGH. Sometimes I wonder why the scales are always different. :) BTW, I checked
the help and located the manual. PLEASE tell me the manual is useful. Poser and Bryce
manuals are prime examples of how NOT to do it. :) Poser 7 might have a better one, I haven't
checked it yet but my faith in 3d manuals has not been very good since most of the ones I have
are terrible.

The Carrara5 manual is just about the best manual about. However, you will find it does not include instructional information on some of the great goodies that were in the 5.1 update.

I suggest (regularly) that always, before bringing questions to forums, to do a search of the Help Manual.  Even if, rarely, it will not give you a particular answer, it may help in better refining the quality of your questions.

(Bryce and Poser Manuals are great examples of how not do them--should be given as how not to instructions at all educational facilities!)

You talk about bringing Poser stuff into Carrara and THEN taking back to Poser?  Most people only use Poser as a resource for Carrara!  Why would anyone want to actually do work in Poser when you have Carrara?

Because I'm completely familiar with Poser, and an utter newbie with Carrara. Just as an
example, in trueSpace, it would take me about 15 to 20 minutes to model the Siren's hull, basic
shape. In Carrara, at the moment, I still have no idea how to even begin doing the same thing.
I've had trueSpace for years though, and Carrara for less than a week. It will take time, alas, to
be as familiar with Carrara as I am with Poser, Bryce, and trueSpace. I don't know about
Carrara, but in Poser, I turn the models I build in trueSpace into Poser figures that are
completely posable and, after MANY headaches, the same scale as the Poser Folk. I don't
know if Carrara can do that, but again, it will take time to find out. It's one of the reason's I
hate learning new 3d apps, and why I stuck it out for so long with trueSpace. :)

The answer is yes. A lot of the well known suppliers of both free and payfor Poser items available on various forums, have been made in Carrara. And much older versions than Carrara5.

A lot of clothing for Poser/Daz females by one author are all done in Carrara.

That's why I picked it up. I had finally gotten fed up with tS. Besides, when I first got tS, I was in
the same boat, wondering where the 'make model' button was. :) Carrara can SAVE in OBJ
format, tS can only export using a plugin, and it is a terrible export. My eagle was exported
with extra polys blocking the cockpit door, yet 3d Exploration converted the mesh flawlessly.
tS is just not a good modeler if you want to use it in tandem with other programs. From
everything I've heard and read, Carrara IS. As you said, a number of merchants make their
content with Carrara, a BIG selling point for me. :) Now I must sleep as I need to be up VERY
early for work. I think I know how to start the hull in Carrara and will try it after work to see if
I have it right. :) Thanks. ^_-
