Subject: having trouble with soft mountain/water

I need to make a water plain that has waves... so when I set this scene up, the lake is not calm. It needs little waves. There will be a pike under the water being reeled in by a fly fisherman in the raft. The waves I've tried to make out of a terrain have been large! Any ideas? Robert

Adjust the terrain size in the terrain editor to match the scale your looking for. There is a button to turn off that automatically sizes the terrain to your 'Working box.' Then set the size... in miles! :o But after you set it to, say .01 miles, you can then scale it in the properties tray to fit your scene best. Hope this helps!

Also, try starting with a flat plain, then experimenting with stacked noise and smooth filter (assuming that your trying to use soft mountain). you can find a balance that will create some excellent small random wave effects.

Another method (for C5) is to use a texture map for displacement on a plane. Make sure subdivision is switched on in the displacement shader. The picture shows the map used and the result.

Absolutely, I've also used the wave/ripple shaders, then displaced them.

Yes, Me likee. That's what I'll do. Very nice, that way I can set up a wave coming from the raft as the fly guy reefs back on the pike, his wake can cause a circular wave to form and roll out away from the raft. Thanks. Falconperigot, do you mind posting your texture map above? I can play around with it for starters. Robert

Here you are. I set the displacement amplitude to .5 and the map brightness to 45 (otherwise it gets rather choppy).

Falcon, May I ask how you created the map?

falconperigot ( ) posted Thu, 02 February 2006 at 1:58 AM

Hi Ed, Yes, I did it in ZBrush, though it wouldn't be difficult in Photoshop; just start with a black background and then airbrush on the grey lines. The displacement options in Carrara make it easy to adjust from dead calm to uncomfortable. ;-) I suppose you could paint a map in the terrain editor in Carrara but I don't find that particularly easy to work with.

Falcon, Thanks, I'll look into that. Ed

I actually like that feature, but you need a tablet to enjoy it.

No need to think outside the box....
    Just make it invisible.

Hi Falcon, could you post the water texture settings? I am having a hard time getting the trans. and color to match what you have... I want mine to look like your's : ). Thanks

Here's the scene file. Just change the extension to .car before opening. (I've put in a procedural displacement instead of the map so that you don't get an error when opening.)
