ok...i modeled this OBJ grenade in C4D R8.2....then assigned the material groups in UV mapper...then take into Carrara 2.1 for shaders and rendering....then the problem---> in UV mapper i grouped 3 material groups. 1. the body called "Body" 2. the pin called "Pin" 3. the top end called "Head" then i group all vertices/facets and assigned all to one group called "Grenade" when i take this OBJ file into Poser 5 theres no problem...i can change the texture of each of the three material groups. But when i take it into Carrara there is only one material group....so when i apply say the color green to the body, it also ends up coloring the pin and head. what am i doing wrong? please help.. thanks for any tips. BT

Hi, don't take the 3 groups and put them into one overall group in UV Mapper. Use these settings on import and your 3 grenade parts will show up in the shader room under a "layer list" shader. Different shaders can be applied to each part on the list. mdc

Not quite. Carrara, as of ver3 at least, uses "Mapping zones" which correspond with materials. With a MTL file created by Poser, Carrara will create a proper layers list shader with the right materials zones. On a straight import, however, it will all come in with a single zone...you'll need to open the object again in the vertex room and assign groups of vertices to mapping zones manually. An odd and similar thing happens in the reverse; if you set up mapping zones in Carrara then export, you get an .obj file with NO usemtl statements. My experience was I needed to create a layers list shader and put something in every layer in the materials room before Carrara would "confirm" the material zones and export proper usemtl lines.
