Subject: Poser Barn to Carrara

notefinger ( ) posted Sun, 11 July 2004 at 9:49 PM · edited Tue, 07 July 2026 at 9:19 PM

I got a very good barn in Daz's free section and it renders very well in Poser. I wanted to take the barn over to C3 and so saved the Poser file as both 3DS and Obj form. When I imported the OBJ barn into C3 I was asked, for each object, to locate the texture map jpeg. None were to be found. I even use search to look for the jpeg on my hard drive and found nothing. I had no luck getting the textures with the 3DS formate. Whats a guy to do? I quess the basic essence of the questions is how to save Poser items and get the textures without having to buy Transpposer?

when you loaded the file into Poser it(the daz loader) probably moved the textures into the textures directory of poser. make note of what Carrara is asking for then go to the Poser runtime textures directory and Look for them there by by doing a search for the files in question. You will need to copy them into the same directory as the .obj and associated .mtl file (the .mtl should reference the same files Carrara is looking for). There's also something called transposer but I don't know what that's about as it is only for C3.

Transposer is a plugin for Carrara that allows for importing not only the objects and their textures, but their animation as well. The nice thing about Transposer is, if you make changes to the file in Poser, and then open your carrara file again, it will automatically bring over the changes made, without having to redo all that work manually. But, your right, Transposer is not needed to get the files over. It just is a manual thing as opposed to an automatic thing.

What is the function of the .mtl file?

nomuse ( ) posted Tue, 13 July 2004 at 2:09 PM

.mtl file references the "usemtl" statements in the .obj file to texture map and materials values. The .obj file usually contains nothing but vertices, faces, etc., in group seperated by tiny statements like: g hip or usemtl redwood A .mtl file is much like the materials section in a Poser cr2; # Created By Carrara 1.0 newmtl Hilt Ns 163 d 1 Ni 0.001 illum 2 Ka 0.2 0.2 0.2 Kd 0.5 0.5 0.5 Ks 0.25 0.25 0.25 Make sense?

I left the .mtl out when I dragged the the jpegs and obj files to a folder. When I went to render the object the texture didn't show up. I'll put the .mtl file in with the bunch to see if that does the trick.

notefinger, It should - you might also experiment with whether adding the relative paths into the .mtl file references works with Carrara - it might not work but it might save some space if it does.(remember to make a backup mtl file) - TJ

I seem to remember that if you can point Carrara to ONE of the files, it will find all the other ones on the same path. Trick is getting the files out where Carrara can see them! Best thing (I did this moving Poser figures before Transposer) is to make a folder and copy the obj, mtl, and all the textures referenced by the original figure to it.

notefinger ( ) posted Tue, 13 July 2004 at 11:11 PM

I put ALL the files in one folder and imported that obj but the jpeg still didn't get mapped to the object.

Not sure why it isn't working for you. Well, there's always the old-fashioned way. Using either Poser or a text editor, figure out which texture map goes with each material. Unless....could this barn use proceedurals? Was it a Poser5 only item? The other way to go is with Carrara's own materials. Check out the Lumber Yard shaders some time. Not quite a weathered wood, but you should be able to get there...

bikermouse ( ) posted Wed, 14 July 2004 at 4:50 AM

why don't you edit the mtl file in notepad, copy the contents to the clipboard and paste them to the reply box here so we can see if there's a problem with the mtl?

notefinger ( ) posted Wed, 14 July 2004 at 5:39 AM

It not just the barn but the same happens with other Poser items, like the Tee Pee and canoe above. The TP is easy to use Carrara shaders on but the barn is very complex.

bikermouse ( ) posted Wed, 14 July 2004 at 6:13 AM

I did a quick check with the default poser figure in P5 and got a .mtl with nothing in it. Check to see if this is what is happening to you.

nomuse ( ) posted Wed, 14 July 2004 at 10:30 AM

Well, if the mtl is blank, but the object renders fine in Poser, I'd suggest taking that text editor to the Materials section of the cr2/pp2. Or did I say this already? Seems it wouldn't be too bad to just write down "Porch = Porch.jpg. Awning = wood3.jpg, etc."

bikermouse ( ) posted Wed, 14 July 2004 at 3:43 PM

nomuse, Yes! I was suggesting that if what I stated above is the case it is a problem that needs to be handled from within Poser. As we haven't seen the actual .mtl we're shooting in the dark, so to speak. - TJ
