Subject: Anything Glows

Hi, anyone who can teach me on how to use the "Anything Glows" function in Carrara? The manual does not really explain. Is there a particular shader/texture that has to be used in order to make things work? What I precisely want to do is to create a light table like the ones you use to view color slides or film negatives. I could place the lightsource in the box below, but the effect will not be ralistic. Ideally, the glass plane would be the lightsource itself...

One important consideration is making sure that you have your preferred colour selected in the Glow Channel of the object which you have applied Anything Glows to. Have you done that in your scene? It makes a huge difference in the final output.

Anything Glows is a plugin that Eovia aquired from DCG. (Digital Carvers Guild) Follow the link to their home page, and you'll find PLENTY of info as to how to use their products, as well as updates. Eric is also constantly in here with us, and is always giving great sugestions on how to use Carrara. (I'm kinda surprised that he didn't respond to this question 1st!) Hope this helps! :>

Gosh, it's early yet... let poor Eric have his morning coffee at least!

yeah! yeah! pushy people!

bluetone ( ) posted Fri, 17 January 2003 at 9:43 AM

Sorry! Didn't mean to push, but there have been plenty of times I have seen postings from Eric FAR too early in the morning. (Earlier then me! ;>) I'm still trying to get my head around his stuff, never mind INVENTING it!

Actually I did drop by about 1/4 to 6am my time, but was on my way to the day job and didn't think I had time to answer properly.

In this case AG would probably not be a bad choice to make the table act like an area light. Since those tables are typically pretty uniform in color, you can probably get away with using the Light Color setting instead of Object Color or Glow. It will run faster that way. Select the table top and then use the Edit|Add new Anything Glows. That will hook up everything you need. If your table top is not a seperate object, you'll need to use the Object Color or Object Glow for your color settings so that the legs don't emit light.

If you've got some CPU cycles to spare Environment Lighting will make it look real nice. Skip the instructions above, make sure your mesh has lots (100 or so)of pretty evenly shaped facets, then with the top selected click Edit|Environment Lighting. Change the default settings to Quality = 6 and Color = Object Glow. That should give off very nice diffuse light.

As the others pointed out, I've got a few tutorials for Anything Glows at the site They might help you get going and if you have any other questions, post something here or send me an email directly.

"At your day job"? C'mon, Eric, you can come up with a better story than that. We're supposed to be creative people here. Try again. Here, I'll get you started: "Actually I did drop by about 1/4 to 6am my time, but then the alien ship landed in the city park..." "Actually I did drop by about 1/4 to 6am my time, but then mutant bikers smashed through the wall, and it took a little time to teach them proper manners." "Actually I did drop by about 1/4 to 6am my time, but then, The Bat Signal!" Um, I mean DCG Signal. Remember, us Carrara/Ray Dream types are held to a higher standard, so no slacking.

I didn't want to reveal my secret identity by giving up too many details, but let's just say millionaire playboy by day, and by night dark avenger of justice. Now, I must be off, there is evil to twart! Eric Winemiller Digital Carvers Guild 3D Extensions for Carrara http://digitalcarversguild.com

I'm late in getting into this thread, but I have to know how one "twarts" evil. I've heard of thwarting it, but twart has a suspiciously inappropriate ring to it! - Dex

twillis ( ) posted Tue, 21 January 2003 at 2:00 PM

I think you can tart evil, but not sure about twart. Unless "twart" is art that twillis does, in which case Eric is a meanie-head for calling it evil! Even though it probably is.

Ah, see, if you knew the secret to twarting evil, you could be a dark avenger of justice too!

twillis, I wouldn't your art evil, maybe a little misguided. I'm sure that with the right rehabilitation, it could one day be a very productive member of society. Eric Winemiller Digital Carvers Guild 3D Extensions for Carrara http://digitalcarversguild.com
