This week we
continue with our "Tribute to the Masters". Today we're
honoring Pablo Picasso, and proclaim today to be "Picasso
Wednesday " at Renderosity!
His full name is
Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno
MarÃa de los Remedios CrispÃn Crispiniano de la
SantÃsima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso. His work
continues to be admired by artists of all mediums. It has been
estimated that Picasso produced about 13,500 paintings or designs,
100,000 prints or engravings, 34,000 book illustrations and 300
sculptures or ceramics.*
As with many of the "Masters", Pablo Picasso's life
was filled with creative angst and extreme personal conflict. His
love life was a prime example of his chaotic passion, having had
four children by three different women along with numerous
mistresses and lovers. His personal life was filled with drug and
alcohol use, including the infamous Absinthe so popular with the
artists of the time. There were even accusations from his former
lover, Fernande
Olivier that he had involvement in thefts from the
Louvre.
Over the years, his style changed dramatically and his works are
generally classified into the following groups:
Early Works, Blue Period, Rose Period,
African Period,
Beginnings of Cubism,
Analytical Cubism and
Synthetic Cubism with each one having distinctive,
defining qualities.
There has been continued debate over the years as to whether or not
Picasso was in fact a "Master Artist". Many did not and
still do not understand nor appreciate his unique and unusual
style. Would we consider him a "Master" were he to appear
on the scene today using the latest digital artist tools?
Regardless of your position on Picasso's art or his personal
life, what cannot be debated is that he lived his life for the
purpose of creative expression and expressed himself without
reservation. He was never afraid to experiment with themes. He
shared his deepest fears as he faced his own mortality in this, his
final self-portrait. Pablo Picasso was 91 years old when he passed
away.
We invite you to discuss your thoughts and impressions about
Picasso and to share any additional information that you might have
on this colorful artist. |
