Description
Exiting the tiny room I found myself in a large dark room, lit up as if by stars and cold lighting reflecting water reflective patterns on the blue carpet. A sign is off to the side and narrates the night of the disaster.
Just before midnight on April 14, 1912, the sky is full of stars, the air is cold and the sea is calm. The lookouts are up in the Crow's Nest: Frederick Fleet and Reginald Lee. In a few minutes their watch would be over. Then a dark mass appears off the ship's bow, hidden by the absence of waves breaking at the base. Fleet rings the bell three times and phones his report to the bridge: "Iceberg right ahead!"
In response, the First Officer William Murdoch gives the order to out the ship's wheel hard over and engines stopped in attempt to avoid the collision. The Titanic is too slow to turn and avoid the iceberg; 40 seconds after the iceberg was spotted, the Titanic scrapes alongside it, the iceberg raking across the starboard side of the ship.
Thomas Andrews of Harland & Wolff inspects the damage and reports to Captain Smith. The Titanic is able to float with any two of the 16 watertight compartments flooded, and able to survive the loss of the first four. But the iceberg ripped open six, making the sinking of the ship unavoidable.
"Titanic is Doomed."
It was reading these words that my brain finally accepted the fact that the Titanic's fate would never change.
