Description
Despite all that is learned from the Titanic, mystery still shrouds it about why certain decisions were made, though some theories were floated.
Telegraphs were used to send messages through the ship. The bridge telegraph communicated with the boiler room on the telegraph with things like STOP or FULL SPEED AHEAD. The captain's message would be sent along to an identical faceplate in the boiler room.
As was seen in the small room before, all the ships in the area were sending out reports of ice but when recovering the telegraphs from Engine room, it was still set to FULL SPEED AHEAD.
While not mentioned in the exhibit, there was the one theory that the Titanic actually left with a small fire onboard. In desire to not delay the launch, they left with it still aflame. It became apparent that they could not put it out and that the only hope was to reach their destination in a timely manner; slowing down could mean the fire becoming an uncontrollable problem aboard. Following this theory, it was also possible it weakened the metal in the Titanic which was why the damage from hitting the Iceberg was so bad. This is however a theory. Only the Captain would know why he made such a decision.
Talking about fire, in the boiler rooms they had fire hoses so they could wet the hot ashes from the boilers. The fire hose fixture can be seen in this picture as well as value identification plates and of course the Telegraph handle.
