Description
Stellarion was well on it's way to Kalai, tearing through subspace at level-3 faster-than-light speed, when the Captain decided to take the Robot's advice and split the FTL journey into 3 segments. During the second pause, 6 days into the trip, scans revealed a chilling truth: had they continued, the ship would have grazed the gravity well of a dark, distant outer planet of a faint star -- a near-catastrophic miss.
On the morning of the ninth day the ship's AI announced their successful arrival at Kalai, the mysterious world claimed by the Robot to be their sanctuary, a new home for its kind.
From high orbit Stellarion spent an hour scanning and observing this seemingly-lifeless planet, finding nothing of great interest, then the Robot transmitted coordinates: the drop-off point, their final destination.
While the cargo lander could easily deliver the robots remotely and return unmanned, the Captain asked the Robot, "May I follow you on the way down? I'd love to see your place."
"Certainly. But be aware that the atmosphere is unbreathable for humans.”
Within an hour both landers gently settled onto Kalai’s rocky surface, hatches hissed open, and 14 robots stepped out, walking off towards a sight that awed both Mik and the Captain -- a strange yet magnificent architectural structure carved into a mountain.
Several minutes later the Robot approached, accompanied by a smaller unit bearing a metallic box. The small robot stepped forward and extended it toward the Captain,
"A gift," it said, its voice a soft hum, "for your aid. Travel safely, Captain.”
Back aboard their lander, Mik eyed the box with suspicion, “What if it’s a bomb, sir?”
“A fair point," said the Captain "we’ll open it remotely in the other lander, well away from the ship.”
Careful examination of the box by robotic arms and sensors of a maintenance robot produced no explosion. Instead, they found an instruction manual, detailed plans and an actual working subspace communicator -- something that had eluded Earth scientists for the past 10 years.
The Captain stared at the gift, a faint smile breaking through, “Not a bomb, Mik. A bridge.”

Excellent !
That meeting with the robots seems so far of great value, between the advice to travel safely and the giftbox now.
Very true, Caty, very true:-)
These are fun images and stories. I enjoy them. - Bob
Thanks Bob:-)
This might be the end of the whole FTL chapter. Someday I might pick-up this entire SF saga with new 'future history' events, but for now it's time to give it a rest and do something easy and way less difficult.
Good spot to end the series....no real questions left unanswered only thoughts of what could go wrong, hidden agendas and such.
Gorgeous artwork Max and gotta make time for yourself, its all about the fun :)
Thanks, Steff.
Without your support and a few others I wouldn't have gotten this far:-)
Just about a year ago I returned to this site for a peek, and got caught-up in all the new excitement, not planning to stay around for more than a week or two, but here I still am ... LOL;-)
and stay...at least for a few weeks more ;) your not done yet and love what you do, that's why I am still here, you and others that keep me coming back but somedays are harder than other days for sure :)
superb planet base.
Thanx, Eek:-)
