Description
The Stellarion team, now joined by the Captain, returned to the site of 'Merlin’s Find' with two landers.
They climbed into the freshly cut opening of the alien ship and announced their presence with loud shouting.
Two long minutes passed ... nothing but silence.
Then suddenly the robot appeared and began to speak without the AI translator, apparently having learned Earth language:
"You have returned, why?"
"I am the Captain of Stellarion -- I came to take you to where you need to go."
The robot seemed oddly confused and surprised, "I did not expect this. You have changed your decision -- why?"
"I'll try to explain another time, now do you still want to leave or not?"
"Certainly," said the robot, "but first I must awaken my companions who are in low-power sleep mode."
Within two hours all 15 robots were neatly tucked into the cargo lander while the team members boarded the other, then both ascended to join Stellarion. As a precaution, an agreement was made for the robots to remain in the lander which can be ejected from the hangar-bay should any signs of hostility or danger show up. In addition, Stellarion would self-destruct if ever taken over by any hostile entity.
Before setting course for Kalai, the Captain received a comm from the chief robot:
"Captain, I understand you have never traveled such a distance. Are you aware of gravity-bumps during FTL travel?"
"What are you referring to?"
"The danger of continuous FTL travel increases exponentially with distance. At 40 of your light-years that danger becomes significant, especially with primitive sensors. It would be wise to split your FTL journey into at least 2 segments, and re-scan your course during the pause."
"And what if we don't?" the Captain asked, "what could happen?"
"You could accidentally pass through a gravity well -- and anything larger than a small moon would transform you and your ship into a very hot burst of energy."

Well I didn't expect this outcome and pleasantly surprised but now very concerned that our own scientists knew nothing about Gravity-Bumps.....Good thing the robots got a ride then :)
Sweet perspective and superb addition to your story :)
For distances of 5 or 25 Ly, common in this early age of FTL travel, those gravity-bumps are basically a non-issue. But sooner or later they will become an issue when a disaster happens. Perhaps that future disaster was just prevented, thanks to the robot.
I like the image and the story behind !!!
Thank you, Pelican. Glad you like it:-)
Excellent work !
Thanks, Water!
Great combo of elements.
well done.
Thanks, Lyla!
Sounds like it was a good thing they had those robots aboard. Great artwork and continuation of the story!
But we still don't know if the robots are engaging in deception or not. They could ultimately be planning a brutal extermination campaign of all humanoid life!
