Description

The time is one year before Benny's family moved to Anytown. Benny was never afraid of anything, he would do things most other kids would run from. But he never did things for show, he just felt compelled to prove himself to himself alone... Then there came a day when he was pushed into doing an act of complete stupidity by a classmate at school. "Try it... just a little", the kid kept saying. Benny knew it was dumb, not to mention most likely deadly. His pride finally got the best of him and slowly he took the quarter the other kid was holding out to him and scooped up the mercury from the counter top. His hand trembled causing him to nearly let the liquid slip off the coin as he tipped it between his lips. There was no taste, nothing seemed to change, that was until a few hours later. It was very early the next morning, well before daylight when Benny awoke in a sweat, feeling burning and cramping in his midsection... gasping for breath, he yelled for his mom. The ride in the ambulance was hazy, as he slipped into and out of consciousness. The next memory he had was of being in a room, white and sterile but brilliant beyond anything he had ever seen. He was surrounded by silhouettes of beings, all shrouded in pure white energy. They had no real forms, just shimmering outlines. He knew he wasn't in the hospital, but where was he...? "Am I dead.. he wondered, not asking but thinking the words. The answer came immediately, "You are not dead preciously, and you don't belong here". Again, no words were spoken, he heard it not with his ears but seemingly just "felt" them. "You must return to where you were before". In the next instant he could hear voices, this time with his ears... "Oh my God, he's alive... Get a doctor". Benny eyes opened enough to see he was in what looked to him like the meat locker at the butcher shop in town...then he passed out again.

Very cool! I've never fooled with mercury before..I bet it's amazing stuff, however poisonous. I hope Benny's NDE teaches him a bit of caution...or not. Either way he's certain to be changed by his glimpse of that Otherworld. Excellent story, love the picture..how insane would it be to wake up in an icy morgue? I look forward to more! OXOXOXO Jane
