Description

Earlier this year, we got the opportunity to attend a very interesting ornithologic experience ; we visited the nature reserve « Schlammwiss in Uebersyren (Grand Duchy of Luxembourg) (Fondation Hëllef fur d’Natur) where scientists were ringing birds. Bird ringing or bird banding is a technique used in the study of wild birds, by attaching a small, individually numbered, metal or plastic tag to their legs or wings, so that various aspects of the bird's life can be studied by the ability to re-find the same individual later. This can include migration, longevity, mortality, population studies, territoriality, feeding behaviour, and other aspects that are studied by ornithologists. When i bread show budgerigar's we used ring's but unlike these ring's which are split ring's our were solid...Split ring's are better and safer for the bird's and can easily be replaced if outgrown whereas sealed ring's can and often do cause severe damage to the leg's of the bird's. Terrific share and image

What a delicate job it must be, since those little legs are so fragile. Wonderful shot!

Thanks for sharing this, you've reminded me of a similar experience I had at a friend of my parents, must be close to 30 years ago. They had a mesh cage in the garden to trap small birds, ring & release. I tried to build something similar when we got home but, luckily, never caught anything!
