Description
Just south of Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach, Oregon.
Taking pictures on the beach, minding my own business, and this guy comes along pushing a baby stroller. He stopped to fiddle with his sandal, which is really what caught my attention. The window on the back of my camera is articulated, and I like to take pictures of people at a 45-degree angle from the way I'm facing. In other words, the camera lens is pointed directly at the subject, but I'm facing off to his right by quite a bit, apparently not looking at him.
(You wouldn't believe how many people are fooled by this. Even when I'm SHOWING them, they're later amazed that I got a picture of them when I never looked at them! Amazing.)
Anyway ... I think this guy clocked me.
BTW, that baby stroller was locked up tighter than a drum. He could have had anything in there. The front was closed, the back was zipped up, and he had a little window in the top that he peeked into to make sure the baby (or whatever) was still there, I guess.
Perhaps there's a new safety rule about babies not being exposed to their surroundings, but I couldn't help but wonder what the kid was getting out of the whole thing.
This contraption prompted me to look up three-wheeled strollers, and there are more designs of this sort than you can shake a stick at! One is called "Safe Voyage." I mean seriously ... how dangerous can it be for a baby to be able to see where it's going? Do people pushing strollers stop so suddenly that the baby is thrown clear of the little seatbelt and out onto the street? Give me a break.

haha great candid capture! I, too, love taking pictures of people when they dont exactly know haha great result and thanks for sharing! :-)
Cool capture of geek boy lol..well done!!
Wonderful capture, Tara We can actually blame the few true idiots out there who seem to go out of their way to create havoc and generally cause industry to create 'safer' items, where-upon another set of fools break them...
Wow, we never had seatbelts, especially in strollers, when I was a kid...I remember my brother being pushed as fast as we could run, tipped all sideways in his little rompers, and giggling up a storm. He survived childhood just fine (as did we all) Talk about a big-brother nanny state! So maybe this guy will see his pic here and get huffy? Who knows. Great candid with your sneak-attack method!
I've seen this species in Chicago as well...usually the things wedged into their sandals are more interesting than anything else. And yeah, those hand-pushed SUVs are an amazing idea. I wish I'd come up with it: I mean, how brilliant must advertizing be if people can be talked into shelling out lots of money for something that's going to be useless in less than 5 years?! And hey, maybe one of Frank Herbert's Guild Navigators is in there, flopping around on his nul-gravity cushions, breathing in his billowing, orange clouds of melange gas. Oh, but wait a minute; maybe the hermetically sealed stroller environment stunts the growth of babies, thus making the strollers useful for more than a few short years...or the darn thing is just a CELSS (Closed Environment Life Support System) and the passenger is actually a methane breather from one of those Extrasolar planets we keep hearing about. At any rate, I love this shot. And Geek Boy looks like the scores of North Facians we have here. I wonder what facet of the collective he's from; they seem to employ the use of color and not the normal graphite gray so common in the Midwest. Ah...maybe he's a herbivore and that jacket keeps hungry predators from seeing him and thus endangering the contents of the buggy. I like this shot, and I often wonder at the logic of shorts and sandals and then a long-sleeve jacket (for warmth)...if you want warmth, stop exposing body surface!!!! Oh, I can go on and on about this shot...there's so much in it, but I'll be nice and shut up. It's a wonderful shot.
Great snapshot, his face says it all "Hey you, what you doin?" But hey, I get your point totally, why take your kid on a beach stroll if he/she can't see nothing and can't feel the spray of the sea. I can sum up my attitude to him as WTF! Wonderfully illustrative snapshot of life today though!
You never told me you had trained as a Ninja. In my day they didn't even have seatbelts in cars. If we came to a sudden stop mom's arm would whip across the seat and smack us in the chest so we wouldn't smash head first into the big metal dashboard. And we turned out fine. And fine we turned out. And out turned fine we. Great stealth shot.
I agree with wysiwig, except once my mom wasn't fast enough and I did a face plant on the metal dashboard. Ouch. I still remember standing on the seat beside her though, and obviously I survived. Great shot.
It's good to see the beach again, I miss it, especially when the storms whip up sea foam and it goes galloping down the beach. Great shot, he's probably just protecting the little tyke from too much sun, since it's been decidedly absent this spring. Still, I'd rather feel the elements.
Kinda scary to think that there is a baby in there! It's kind of scary thinking about BEING that baby in there Maybe it's his pet iguana... Neat shot though...caused a lot of discussion which is always good...
I guess my son survived in spite of my lack of high tech baby equipement.. I had the car seat, but his stroller--one of those collapsible umbrella type, was anything BUT high tech.. I kept it in the back of the car and by the time he outgrew it, there was no rubber left on the wheels. Not only could he see, he often came home with leaves in his hair from the walks we took!! Great shot, btw- I hope that poor kid saw SOMETHING!! lol My sister's neighbors just paid $300 for a CAR SEAT--advertising sure pays--they told me about all the safety features it has. It does everything but sit up and bark, not that that will keep the poor baby safe!
Well, you know..... It's just the times we live in, Tara.... I strongly suspect the kid is in there with a laptop, GPS, and cellphone making deals with other kids in human-powered SUVs like this... You know..... "Hey, Mikey, I have a buyer for those 12 jars of Gerber's strained peas you're trying to unload......" What a fun shot, though!
this is cool shot . never seen a baby buggy like this one
I use to photograph children like this in a studio using a 2 1/4 SQ Bronica sideways on, Give them a Kodak film box to play with and you were away.
Perhaps that's his whole world wrapped up in there! Great candid Tara.
Maybe it's to keep the baby warm. Very well done!!
Does anyone remember how it is to be in a tent, when the sun is shining and it is about 20C or even less. It is like being in an oven. I say poor little baby who has to be boiled in such a baby stroller. I do hope there was NO baby in that one. Let us hope he is only trying to warm up his food in there. Excellent shot though :-)
The scariest thing is that if there really IS a baby in there he might be the father. These vehicles are called ITS..Infant Travel Systems here and cost 3X more than my Volvo did when I bought it 7 years ago. Mark made me laugh..when I was still a young woman I rumbled a suitor, purporting to be a single man, when he braked suddenly and flung his arm across my chest. "How old are your kids?" I asked. And he told me before he realised he had broken cover.
Yep your busted and I think it's body language as much as anything else that gives people away! And if he's a photographer and sees the direction of your lens, he'll know exactly what your doing regardless of which way your viewfinder is pointing. The best way to avoid getting busted is to pluck up the courage and ask if you can take his picture. Failing that, a telephoto lens might be your best bet. The child could simply be sleeping and he wants to protect it's delicate skin. I know I would.
When I was a toddler the baby I used to crawl in the dirt outside, eating sand, mud, millipedes, etc. The baby next door was not allowed outside, everything that touched his lips had to be boiled first - even a banana. He spent more in hospital than anything else. My same opinion about strollers... It is fun having a flip-out screen. Very different POV's available! Clive
This IS Oregon :)))
I recall this guy...just seemed out of place on the beach. Good humor here and I'm thinking maybe a male nanny??? Excellent result ninja style.
Busted :o)..You would never believe what passes for a pram these days .Mick
Tara the 'photo ninja' LoL :-) He looks like the sort of person my kids would call 'a weirdo'...re baby strollers...it will not be long before they have ejector seats and crumple zones. Our Josh's stroller has a harness that would not be out of place in a jet fighter!...maybe we're gearing up for 'stroller derbys'...
Excellent photograph!
Cool shot!!
love candid shots...don't know he made you ... seems to me he looks right by you. Maybe he is one of the unlucky parents where the kids are not sleeping and need constant movement that they are calm. My brother in law had 2 like these. he would have paid the price if the stroller gives a result. Or the father is an outdoor fan and take the baby on places where the other strollers don't go. Mine always stuck in the first sand we met. So i preferred to have mine in a baby back-pack-seat where they also slept while i am doing what ever i was doing.
Definitely a candidate for best title for a picture on RR!!
Great shot! Every time I see one of these self important dorks wallowing in their paranoid Fear-Of-Life, I roll my eyes and think of Laurence Olivier ominously asking Dustin Hoffman, "Is it safe?" You do have to wonder where the Cult of Stupidly Ridiculous Over Protection is heading. What next? Crash helmets for getting out of bed in the morning? Followed shortly by OSHA standards for Sleep Termination Cranial Protection Devices, mandatory laws for same, fines or jail time for refusal to comply ETC... Anyway, I love this shot!
