Description

Nikon 7900 pocket camera - hand held image. This is the end of this series. It shows a female IO moth (top one) and a male (bottom one). It is obvious that the female is larger and a different color, but what cannot be seen in these shots is the difference in their antennae. The female has slender antenna and the males have feathery ones. Unfortunately, both of these specimens were determined to keep their heads tucked down and their antennae against the sides of their heads and bodies. This image was taken on one of the days when both a male and a female had emerged. After allowing them time to expand and dry their wings, I managed to get them both on my hand at the same time. It took several tries, lol. Out of 15 eggs I found (see the last 2 postings for details), 15 hatched and 14 pupated. 13 of those (7 males and 6 females) have emerged and were released. I am waiting for the last one to finish the project. Some different moths will finish out the week. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee
