Description

Having lived on and off in the NE area of Pennsylvania, I decided to do a render on the strip mining of the anthracite coal regions and the huge pits, here, which still remain long after the mineral has been extracted from the ground. Known as the 'black diamond,' coal was a very lucrative and profitable industry in the region at one time. Today, a few large companies still operate, but mostly, it's independent miners going underground with small operations. This area is also famous for the 'Molly Maguires' Google it...great information. There are many such pits as this in my area, never reclaimed and closed. Some are really scary such as the image in the render...having filled with water and becoming a dumping ground for everything from household waste to vehicles. Recently, two individuals were walking near one of the large pits in this area and for whatever reason, got into an argument and a push and shove scuffle between them ensued resulting in one of them falling some 500 feet down into a 700 foot deep pit. This pit is some 4000 ft. long, 1800 feet wide and 700 feet in depth. He was eventually rescued, but quite badly hurt. In my render for today, you can still see some of the shiny coal seam near the bottom of the pit at the water line. Enjoy and thanks for viewing and commenting. Bryce, resized, sharpened and signature with Paint.Net P.S. On another note, I found out yesterday afternoon that I was named 'Showcase Artist for May' over at ArtNutz.us.

This is an amazing render of those old pits; I've heard of and read about them; you captured them well here. I've also read about people not coming out of them once they fall is, scary places for sure. And your award is well deserved; you are SO good at what you do!!

Superb realism. You always manage to include much to look at without making things look too busy or distracting from the overall theme. I used to hike around PA, and I can attest to this render's realism. Brings back fond memories. Once we figure out how to use this stuff cleanly (as I believe we eventually will), we'll be in business. There's still an OPEC's worth of coal under Scranton, but getting at it is a bit of a problem.

For here they are trying to reinvent the coal, demagogies politicize know there, he/she crawls to years the promises... maybe the badly is not his/her use, but when everything is abandoned, literally shot without being provided of repairs. Superb work as always, applause (5) PS: Congratulations nomination, fairer and deserved.

Congrats on the "Showcase Artist" This render is very detailed in art & info...I am sure all kind of things end up in those pits....It is a shame we did not have any other way to extract...Great work

Great image Keith and an interesting read I had on Wikipedia about the 'Molly Maguires' particularly about how they dealt with those comitting crimes. Tony :-)

Well done on getting the 'Showcase Artist for May Award". Get picture too, Keith. There's a great song about the declining coal industry in 1990's England which devastated huge communities. It's by Jimmy Nail and called 'Big River' your title reminded me of it: "That was when coal was king, The river was a living thing And I was just a boy, but it was mine..."
