Description

All images are from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. For one like me, this is another interesting anthropological phemomenon to watch. Especially, when just minutes away, Jews and Muslims, just as devotedly, spend their times praying at their holy sites. The top image shows the very old church's entrance, the middle images depicts a site where crowds line up to kneel and pray, located upstairs, the bottom image is the center of the church, located at ground level, and there were lines all around, waiting patiently to get in, and a priest would call the next ones in line to enter, as the others would leave from the backside. Behind that supposed site of the cross, is also a cave, which I believe was to have been the temporary tomb of Christ. All of that is now much disputed, because more recent research determined that the site of the crucifixion was located outside of the walls, as well as the tomb. Of course, there is much archeological work being done there and all around Jerusalem. To the faithful, who have gotten this far, just being here, is a spiritual pinnacle, and they won't be bothered by such new discoveries or scientific details. It's all a matter of faith, after all.

On the middle image, I did use flash. Hated to do it, but I did not want to hang around more than necessary, but it was quite dark, and the line was moving rapidly. I tried a non-flash (always my preference) image, and it was ok, but pretty dark. On the bottom image, I set the camera on a step just above the floor and held it tight. Most people stood silently, and there was little movement here. You can tell the slow shutter time by the ghostly image of a person walking across the FOV on the far left.

A fantastic and revealing trio of images, beautifully captured and fantastically presented. Your write-up is quite revealing and informative as well and it's great to see a capture of something so sublime to some. Even if I don't share the same religious perspective, it's good to see an element of a "common" faith that highlights the more uncommon elements of it. Great work, sensitively rendered.

Wonderful images! The concept leaves me at a bit of a loss, but I love your photographs of the place, none-the-less.
