Subject: My first Wings model!

I've finally done it and it only took three days! :o) OK, I know it's not great, the proportions aren't quite right and the construction isn't very elegant but at least it looks like a head, it would even look human if it had ears! I can't seem to get a good render in Wings, it always looks sort of blurry (These are screen shots, not renders). Maybe I need to play with the materials? Or maybe I've screwed up my normals somehow, can you correct this in Wings? While I'm here, a question about modelling. I know 3 sided polys are best avoided, how about 5 or more sided? Are they a total no-no? I'm thinking about importing into other apps, Poser in particular, Wings doesn't seem to mind how many sides they have!

You did an excellent job on this. If you want to add ears there are good tuts on the net even if some are for other programs. I like working with quads. Three sides also work. I have had greater than four sides work in Poser but not extremes. Ron

Thanks Ron, I think this model will be consigned to the trash! I'm working on another head and making a more careful job of it, working from templates and I've been looking at more proficient modellers meshes. I might have a go at putting ears on the new one, they look really tricky though! Baz

Tree days??? Sorry, your work is good but your tool may be not. Try to look for a tool called zbrush. Just for a ideia... Is possible do the same work in 3 minuts and export the model.

No there's nothing wrong with Wings, especially when you consider that it's free! This took me ages because I'm only just starting to model. I've tried the zbrush demo and I like it, I'd buy it if I could afford to, but this would have taken me just as long or longer in zbrush. Hopefully I'll get a bit quicker with practice :o) Baz

Actually, a few big name modelers such as Ken Brilliant and Ambient Whisper have had a few nice things to say about Wings 3D. I have also read numerous comments from Lightwave users who say they are increasingly using W3D for modeling. Certainly it is not all things but once you become familiar with it you will find it to be rather speedy and remarkably versatile. Take a look for yourself at the attached link. - Jack
