Ok, now for my friend Chip..educational time!  This is f/ 4.0....at 300mm.  The depth of field totally obiliterated the background.

This is photo #2, not so great compo but...much more depth of field.

This is f/2.8 but at 11mm.  I was twice as far back for the previous shot just to get it in focus!

Hummm..focal length has a lot to do with it and if macro,  the depth of working room. Ask anyone doing macro shots like the one with the 105mm macro(Sigma perhaps?).    Sometimes you have less than 1/2 inch to work in and going up to a smaller opening like f/10 doesn't help much at all. You need manual focus for that and pick the focal point.  Using the same lens for a portrait shot will give a nice depth of field for a face and disguised background but you have more working room from front to back and you can auto focus on the eyes if you want to.

Now I am confused.

Now that one is a fine example of dof used in a beautiful way, bringing thre eye to the focused rose and giving a soft bg for it's display.

I'm totally impressed with what everyone has been doing with this challenge!  I've been plinking around the edges with it, but need to go back through my work to see if anything comes close.  (Working with three different cameras this week, making comparisons ... dof has only been part of my ... um ... focus, if you will.)  :P

Same settings, focal point on that whatever-it-is-in front.  (Hey ... I only shoot them, I don't actually care about the details!  LOL!)

(Same Canon 6D as Bill used.  We haven't exactly been fighting over it, just ... sharing!)  :)

I really like all of the comparisons and details being shared here!

So much creativity too.

Here is my mannequin, Charlie, gazing into his future in a crystal ball.

I used my Sigma 105mm macro lens, shot at night under a ceiling down light, F2.8 and 1/6 sec exposure.

TomDart ( ) posted Sat, 12 January 2013 at 6:06 PM

Clive, I like this shot with excellent use of shallow dof.  I also have that Sigma lens and truly like it. As a macro it gives a touch more working room for living critters and it also does quite well as a portrait lens, as does the Sigma 50mm macfro.
