Subject: Adrea's Dance (a poser/Carrara animation)

restif ( ) posted Sun, 16 December 2007 at 2:43 PM · edited Tue, 07 July 2026 at 11:41 AM

I've been loving Carrara for years now and I really like Carrara 6. I am using it more and more for not only rendering and, lately with posing my characters and scene set up, but also my animations, though I ususally set them up in Poser and then import it.

I've just uploaded a Dance sequence using both keyframing and Mocap onto the Vimeo site:
here's the link if you want to see it:
http://www.vimeo.com/437680

I am anxious to learn more (specifically am looking to learn NLA in Carrara 6), Hair and dynamics.

If you take a look at the animation, let me know what you think.

It looks good, though it gets a tad boring, but I think it is mainly because of the static camera shots. A dance like this would be filmed much more dynamic I think. Imitating a 4 camera set up, with a crane and a closeup one on the shoulder, you could make it a more captivating thing. And animating some lights, roughly to the beat of the music. The end piece, where she looks at the camera and smiles, makes it worth the watch! I think you left the feet out of the frame, because of the sliding, but that looks a little unnatural too, for a dance act. I think that is because of the imported mocap information. With some extra work, I think you can get some parts to not slide, thus make them good voor closups. Maybe in Carrara itself? Maybe by compensating the changes of the foot position by animating the whole Figure, to keep them static as long as it is supposed to be? I think you can read the movement by selecting the front of the foot (or the toes) in the hierarchy. But, that woud be a lot of work. This are just suggestions for making it better, because with some extra work, this is a wonderful showcase of Poser and Carrara animation, that shows the power of the two programs and their combination! Good luck wit experimenting more, you do inspire me in trying to get more out of the apps!

Thanks for the feedback. Mocap is a challenge for sure, The feet don't slide as much as not stay flat footed on the stage when needed since she is barefoot. It will be some work for sure to get it to work and this mocap wasn't specific for V4, though the walk on stage was.
The last part was hand keyed, Rough but still learning.

I agree, more dynamic cameras and potentially strobe lights or volumetric lights will improve it.

As I fool around with it and come up with the next installment, I'll post the animation too.

thanks again.

I liked it. mainly the face animation. it's rare to see a poser model user who can do any kind of facial expressions, rarer still to see somebody who can animate said expressions, and almost unheard of to see somebody who can animate said expressions in a pleasing manner. you did the dance mocap yerself? or was it one of the downloadable dance sequences from SMS, house of moves, mediaphiles, truebones et al.?

The dance part is a bvh file from Hot Moves (Eclipse studio puts it out). Thanks for the comment, I'm glad you like it.
I've done some actual speaking sequences using V4 and mimic version 1. Comes out fine.
I expect I'll post it on vimeo sometime soon.

I do have a lot of fun with this.

WOW!  I am impressed.  I admit it is not purfect but I think it is really good and it is inspiring. You achieved a terrific natural lighting effect. Her smile is terrific. I've worked with some of those dance sequences and you achieved some nice timing with them. I'd love to see more of your work.

**You are off and running to a great start.  Better than what I could do.  The dance part looks tailor made for the Puppeteer animation in DAZ Studio.

Thanks,
Puppeteer looks great, I definitely will give a go at  it. Looks like it could be great for controlling custom animations.

Thanks for the video link!

Like it too !!!
(Sorry about my bad english!)
Is there a chance to get the hole thing as a BVH File from you ???

I don't have a full bvh, but I did use one of the dance bvh's from Eclipse studio's Hot Moves. They worked okay on V4, though not perfect.
