Subject: Latest Ship WIP

Sorry about that. My internet's on the fritz again (DSL is SO much trouble...)

Anyway, this IS my latest ship. It's modeled in Wings by me, texture by me in Paint Shop Pro and Bryce, minor postwork in Gimp for the softglow.

I made it this afternoon when I had nothing better to do than just sit there for hours adding detail.

Any ideas for improvement? EDIT: And, for some reason, the upload to R'osity seems to have compromised the image quality substantially. But you get the gist, I think =)

Make soem more textures and texture different parts ofthe ship differently. You can do this by using colors in wings and use the colors to materials command. Then you can put a different texture on each part of the ship as you like. Also some lights for the windows.

There is too many details on the texture for a "small" ship, I mean it's a small ship because it got wings.. so it's made to flight in atmosphere.. if you want to make a really big ship.. no need for wings ( usually big ship don't enter atmosphere.. they use some shuttles to land )

Rayraz ( ) posted Wed, 01 June 2005 at 6:34 AM

looking good :D I like the textures.

Not to be overly critical, pidjy, but the wings aren't aerodynamic and are there as support structures for various pod elements. That's what I'm thinking anyway. I agree with Dann-O. Adding different textures to different parts will elevate this ship from hobby ship to professional construction. Keep at it.

Thanks for your suggestions everyone. pidjy-- I still want to have lots of detail on the texture, small ship or no. Maybe just no hull plates? (I've got a few ideas for v3). bandolin-- Turns out you and pidjy are both right. The ship is smallish (not as small as the classic x-wing but not capital ship size, more of a corvette I'd say), but not really intended to enter the atmosphere. Regardless, here is the second version. I added a lot more details to the model, and changed the lighting slightly. This rendered overnight this morning, took about two and a half hours. No postwork except for the Poser figure added to give some sense of the scale I'm going for.

cambert ( ) posted Wed, 01 June 2005 at 10:33 AM

The scale of your poser figure seems to suggest that your ship is only about 3ft high at the moment. Is there more to be added on top (like a cockpit) or does the crew lie down inside ;-) ?

shinyary2 ( ) posted Wed, 01 June 2005 at 1:47 PM

It's a one-man fighter, and I think that the figure is just a bit too large. And, yes, the pilot does lay down inside. See that domeish thing that bumps up in the middle of the fore area? That's the "cockpit". This ship is sort of the supersports car of the starship world =) But I do think it needs to be a bit taller. I'll just have to figure out a way to do that, without sacrificing shape =)

Here's v3.0 I almost put this on a new thread, but just figured that would be annoying. I will add some cockpit glass for the next version. I'm pretty sure I've got an idea how to do it. Any further suggestions?

lordstormdragon ( ) posted Thu, 02 June 2005 at 2:21 AM

It's looking amazing! Good work on the model, and the lighting looks cool too...

pidjy ( ) posted Thu, 02 June 2005 at 3:43 AM

the green lights on the dark texture is a nice touch and it give this ship an agressive look. May be you can add some landing gears for a static scenery. Good work!

Viva la difference!!!! Great idea with the lights.

Thanks, everyone. pidjy-- Great idea for the landing gear... I'll give it a try. I'm not sure that I don't like the floating type look, though, sort of gives it a "Star Wars"-ish feel. And, as bandolin pointed out, this ship's wings wouldn't permit it to fly in the atomsphere, so it's got to have some sort of antigravity drive anyway. You can see it in the reflections on the display stand, that's what the green lights underneath the ship are. Anyway, I'm think about trying to get DAZ to sell this for me, after a few finishing touches (like the cockpit glass). Your thoughts?

Rayraz ( ) posted Thu, 02 June 2005 at 9:54 AM

How do I go about having DAZ sell my objects?

Go to www.daz3d.com, look under "publishing", and choose "submit a product". I've never tried it before, but I certainly would like to. I hear drac made over three hundred bucks on a display stand for products (it looks similar to mine, only much better lol).

Rayraz ( ) posted Thu, 02 June 2005 at 11:55 AM

wow that's an easy 300 bucks! so far in over one year as a merchant I haven't even made 100 bucks :| Not even sponsoring the flyer helped! :O

Aye, perhaps we should start a thread somewhere about this topic. All these great models we're all making, and we really should be getting some kind of return for our "precious" time... I have no idea how to even set up a market here at Renderosity. I can model like a madman, texture all night, and animate like crazy. But web-related stuff just eludes me...

shinyary2 ( ) posted Thu, 02 June 2005 at 1:50 PM

LSD, me too... you have no idea how happy I was to find out that I didn't have to learn HTML to write tutorials for Renderosity. I have a feeling that Renderosity's marketplace is similar; they seem to be somewhat consistent about taking out all of the "techie" aspects of publishing to the web. I mean, I join R'osity, and I get unlimited pic upload space and bandwidth, the ability to write tutorials with again unlimited space, and, looks like the ability to publish things very, very easily, and IT's ALL FREE!! You can't beat that. But I agree, we should start a thread about this. I might, but my question is, would it be better to sell a (good) ship model at DAZ or here at R'osity? DAZ is so Poser-oriented, that ships might sort of go by the wayside...

Aye, RayRaz. People buy Macromedia Studio MX all the time! I just got my hands on MX 2004, which includes Flash, Dreamweaver, and all the goodies. Saw it at Half-Price books, but it was marked down FAR below half-price!

Rayraz ( ) posted Thu, 02 June 2005 at 3:17 PM

hmmm I'm quite good at designing buttons, headers, menu's etc, I might be able to sell those then :D

(grins at you) I know you're good, my friend! One of the best, and certainly one of my favorites. I think it's time some of us got together on this subject, pooled our resources. Combined, we might be able to get a lot more done, or at least a lot more research! I'm off to start a thread on the topic in the proper forum, I'll post a link here or in a new Bryce thread after I get something written up...

I told him, sorry, there is no discount for superheroes. I do have to make a living, you know. =) Actually, in all seriousness, didn't he have a jet at one point? Close enough, in that series (comix and movies both I think) a jet would go all the way to Andromeda and beyond if the script said it would. =)
