THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Making big ships...

shinyary2 ( ) posted Tue, 31 May 2005 at 5:42 PM · edited Thu, 12 March 2026 at 12:43 AM

I want to make a capital ship, as in something REALLY big; fleet carrier, battlecruiser, etc. How do I make it look big, and not just like a really detailed fighter? Any tips? I haven't started the actual model yet, since I want to use Wings (both because I think it's better than Bryce for modeling, and because I'm not terribly good at it yet and want to practice). Wings is pretty unforgiving when it comes to mistakes I've noticed, at least for rank novices such as myself, so I want to get an idea of the model in my mind before I start.

Lots of greebles at small size (little fiddly bits), also your texture will be important, and what is in the background.

what mahray said, you gotta fool the eye with the sense of scale

As Drac pointed out on a Sci-Fi WIP of mine, don't make the model out of one primitive. Make it using multiple objects. What happened in mine is that I suffered from severe triangulation. Check out my earlier post. Capital ship, huh. Have we been playing Homeworld.

Ah... so the original famous thread where AgentSmith gave Bandolin the link to that tutorial. Um... actually haven't played Homeworld in a long time. I got to the last level, you know the one with all the ion frigates (at least I assume it is the last level). Got frustrated and quit. Haven't played it since. I'll try the greeble thing. I've (sort of) got a shape in mind. Will post it when I have a half-way tolerable version for your review =)

Lots of little lights maybe. It's a WIP but I think it looks pretty big....

actually, a tiny fighter off to one side of the ship would set the scale as well...just a thought..

Very cool ship Bryster!! I think an additional low intensity radial or two, blueish in color, would help this ship "pop out" of the background more. I almost always use three point lighting on my ships.

shinyary2 ( ) posted Tue, 31 May 2005 at 10:14 PM

Yeah... I usually use two to five point lighting on mine... works better than True Ambience for some reason. Bryster, I was wondering when someone was going to mention little lights. I'm going to have to play around with lighting textures now, see if I can come up with one I like. If anyone has a tutorial on this, I'd go nuts. But I'd rather not just download a texture unless I'm desperate. I want to learn how to do it myself. =)

pidjy ( ) posted Wed, 01 June 2005 at 4:48 AM

you can get some good result using bryce procedural texture ( for the main parts ) with lot of details and a bitmap image for the litlle lights (in the ambiance channel).

file_248725.jpg

you can make that kind of texture to create some greebles , and use it as a bump map, or an elevation map ( on terrain )

pidjy ( ) posted Wed, 01 June 2005 at 4:52 AM

file_248726.jpg

paint some white (or coloured) windows that fit the bump or elevation map and import it in the ambiant channel in the bryce texture editor.

pidjy ( ) posted Wed, 01 June 2005 at 4:53 AM

so you will get those little light at the right place...

try too to play with procedural textures.. you my get some interesting result, but it depend on the kind of ship you want to do. (on this image I use only procedural textures for the ufo.. and it gives all the details I wanted )

Lots of lights, a ton of details and/or greebles :) And ofcourse you could add smaller ships to your pic or something else to put the size in perspective. [Some other medium sized and big ships and another big station :)](http://market.renderosity.com/softgood.ez?Who=Rayraz)

Yup, free advertising from rayraz! =) j/k ray they're great. =) pidjy-- That UFO looks great. I do recognize most of the textures you used, I think (I mean the bump maps of course, obviously they are custom textures =P). Although there are some booleans there, as well--you didn't get ALL of your detail from procedurals lol (just most of it). I think I've seen that bitmap/jpeg texture of yours before. I think I could make something like that... Anyhow, thanks for your input everyone. =)

hehe yea free advertizing too :P actually I sold one just yesterday :D lol I'm pretty happy when I sell anything 'cause it's like soo hard to get people to buy bryce stuff!

shinyary2 ( ) posted Wed, 01 June 2005 at 1:41 PM

Yes, I would have thought that. Too few Brycers out there, and those of us that do exist tend to either prefer to model things ourselves (i.e., me), or buy .obj models because they take up less space, shorter d/l, etc. Your ships are pretty good, though. They look sort of like luxery cruisers, passenger ships, that sort of thing, what with all the different colors and all. =)

Rayraz ( ) posted Wed, 01 June 2005 at 1:53 PM

yea my next products will be obj's and such, allows for a much broader market since they can be imported into almost any program :) I'm not gunna lower myself to making bra's for vicky just to boost my sales though :P (not implying here that every lingery package for vicky is lower-class, but it would be low for me to change my flow just for the money :P)
