Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 May 03 7:58 pm)
Really busy with various things but... I'm game. One week you say?
Here's mine
EXISTENTIAL
He-he, how's that for ponderous? Only playing if significant postwork is allowed.

Nice one Rokket, and nice to see someone participating. Not so much of that anymore. I'm already freezing wings tryin to scrape together my image, plus distracted by a logo design for a friends recording studio. Is linking an image ok for this mini challenge? 200 kb is probably too small for what I'm trying to do.

As an aside, the Forum is working alot better from this end. Still can't figure out how to format text though, on a mobile, but I'm a little dense when it comes to the obvious.

Yeah, there are still a couple things about the changes that bother me, but I am slowly getting used to it myself.
As for the image, I downloaded Lyrra's Jessi Improved a couple days ago from Share CG. I was playing with the morphs and posing her when this challenge came up. I had the pose and the idea, so I modeled a really quick dress and ran the cloth sim. None of her hair (she has like 30 hair props) was doing what I wanted, so I loaded her strand based hair and ran the hair sim.
The rain was added post in GIMP.
If I had a nickle for ever time a woman told me to get lost, I could buy Manhattan.

I don't think there is a limit on the image size anymore. The image I posted was a 698KB PNG...

Just a test to see if markdown linking works with google drive images, not for this challenge... it's an image for rdna challenge. Markdown image links work here! Cool.

Thanks, the eyes are actually collaged in from a photo. The wall is a simple wings3d prop rendered IBL/AO, the face and hair is smudge tool, airbrush, median noise, and a grain filter applied to all. tried to make it look strangely classical but kind of maniacal. lol. There aren't any medium restrictions on the contest it's in. I doubt it will even place, there's alot of entries. Anyway, the image I'm doing for this challenge will kinda sorta look more Poser but I'm gonna post it quite a bit. Here's where the eyes came from.

...Not that there's anything wrong with rendering premade figures in a manner that looks unmistakably like Poser or DS (bottom line, same thing) just something I've been trying to distance myself from in the imagery I've been doing lately. I'm really digging BB's procedural IBL/AO technique that he demonstrated a while back. Interesting method, combined with post, to drift from that conventional look. Similar to various tooning methods, problem is that you can usually still recognize the figures as Poser figures unless you're doing really abstracted sorts of things, scapes, or custom models.
Ah, feeling chatty. Usually talking with friends on FB round this time...

Just a clay style technique, from a thread query when I was primorge... BB was nice enough to come along and demo the method. I like it very much and it's alot faster than IDL and more sympathetic to stylized imagery with post IMO. Useful for showing off your models too in its straight implementation.

This is a great subject for a challenge, hope to see more participants. @rokket: I find the second one has more impact because the pose is a bit rotated and the brighter lights really give the feeling of a summer shower.
@Boni: Nice touch with the animals, they looks so much more composed and relaxed than her making for a great contrast. Great capture of the mood too, I can just see her fidgeting!
My entry is "Giddy".
Like the framing and light on that Kalypso, the only thing I find distracting are the leaves really... but that's nitpicking probably and more of a content thing. The promos for that posable tree don't really reveal how cut out the leaves look, one of the issues with polycount and no instancing.
Edit_ just a guess on the tree from memory. Could be wrong.

These ARE wonderful! Since we don't have a large gallery of images at this point I am expanding the challenge for another week ... the next challenge to consider is ... "Film Noir" ... but the image doesn't have to be in black-and-white, just have that ... "feel". That starts in September! A little overlap, but we can have fun. I'll put up the thread ina few days.
Render On!!

Hi Boni. Thanks for the heads up. I'll just put an indirect link. Image should be done sometime tonight, tomorrow I think. Still messing about with materials and lighting, the image will also work for something at another site where the deadline is tomorrow night, so, wrapping it up.
Just a counter heads up, dragging and dropping does not work on a mobile device, and 'selecting them' doesn't open a browser similarly. At least with android chrome. I think the 'Select Them' option might be busted in general, IIRC I tried using it the other night on a windows machine and it didn't work. BTW, do all of my digital art making on an off line Mac.

Just reload it in your profile... mine is only 200x200, same as before. Think it just needs to be refreshed after the maintenance.

I am getting carried away with this.
Here is another entry.
Pensive. It also happens to be my interpretation of Film Noir. I guess.

Ended up doing very little post other than compositing and some contrast adjustments.

I don't know how you pulled that off, but it was freaking AMAZING! Nice work!

Thanks Rokket. Had to render it in pieces. It's about 800,000 polys, AO/IBL (mat and light, separate passes), min shading rate 0.10, post filter sinc 2, 16 bucket size. All the materials are procedural except for an ambient mask image in the 'eyes'. If I had tried IDL/RT shadows I think I'd still be frozen at the calculation stage. Tried a separate shadow pass test and the image seemed to work graphically without, so...

Like that glowing mist effect on yours btw, the starkness of values is definitely noir. IIRC, the noir cinematic visual style was as much a budget consideration as a stylistic one in the beginning. My favorites are Welles' Touch of Evil and the really strange City of Fear.

I've seen Touch of Evil. I will have to look at City of Fear.
I took most of my influence for that render from "Sin City", believe it or not. It was the last picture I saw in black and white with the comic feel to it. I was going to add some color in areas to mimic that, but thought better of it after I saw what it looked like when I took the color out. I am glad you like it.

Ugh, can't get this link to work... it's just a simple link fer christsakes. Anyway, if you like that high contrast/Sin city look you should check out this animated film...
Renaissance
Thought it was really good visually and story wise.

Damn! That trailer looked really good. I wonder if it's straight animation or if it was cell painted over live action? Either way, it had the noir look and the comic look down.
Thanks for the link.
I really liked Sin City, but the second movie wasn't all that good. The plot twists were fairly bland and predictable. It was well acted though.
The Spirit on the other hand... not so much.

MOOD
Here is a little challenge I have come up with unofficially and thought we all could have fun with it. How do you depict Mood in your images?
The list could go on ... you get the idea. Using whatever visual element you want create an image (in Poser) that creates a mood. We will see what we come up with in a week and maybe we can expand into something more.
Here is mine: Impatient
Have Fun!!
