Subject: WWII fighter pilot needed

Benboom ( ) posted Sat, 01 May 2010 at 9:14 AM · edited Tue, 10 March 2026 at 12:33 PM

A search of the forums gives quite a few results, but only the Apollo Maximus WWII pack seems to be available and I just don't like the way it looks. There are a lot of posts from people looking for a WWII pilot figure, though. There is a free one from a French site which seems to be from WWI but it's all wrong for what I need. I have the Bazze P-47 Thunderbolt and am rendering it but the free separate pilot figure which is mentioned in all of the Bazze documents is apparently no longer available and he doesn't answer emails about it. My father flew a P-47 in WWII and I have photos which I'm using as reference material - I'd sure like to put a pilot in the plane, as it looks pretty silly flying without one.

Anybody know of a solution? I really only need the upper body.

Okay you don't need a "parka " flight suit (high altitude escort) How about you post a few pics  tropical non pressurized what?

So is that TTFN or TANSTAAFL?

The Apollo Max pilot pack is close to actual flight gear used in WWII fighters. If your render is of the pilot inside the cockpit then it shouldn't really take away from your vision

The closest I can think of is the one at:

  • but I assume that is the French one you are referring to as unsuitable.

I detached  the pilot  from Bazze's Spitfire model, but it is probably not what you are looking for either. I don't have his Me109 but the pilot with that is may well be about the same except perhaps for textures.

Where? I have looked all over that site and can't find one. it's colacola.se, not colacoloa.se, BTW. Can you post a link to the pilot file?

Could you describe the process for doing that? I have the Spitfire model and that had occurred to me but I haven't the faintest idea how to do it.

Wow, that is a great resource page. Thanks for posting that link!

I just received a reply from Anders in which he said I should use the pilot from the Spitfire or ME-109. However, the pilot in these is part of the .obj file - how do you extract it so it can be used on its own? This would be the process lmckenzie mentioned earlier.

I've used that French pilot often.  It has a flowing scarf, but you can delete it.

To get the pilot of the Spitfire, load the plane and export the pilot to OBJ.  In the export dialog, uncheck Universe, then check Pilot Body and Pilot Head.  You might want to pose it first, as it will be one OBJ after this.

Tip: If you export the OBJ to Bazze's texture folder it will pick up the texture images okay when you load it.

OK, I used a program called 3D Exploration but you can do it in Poser. My Poser is old but I think the steps are still pretty much the same.

  1. Install and load the Spitfire from the Characters->Bazze folder in the library.

  2. Goto File->Export->Wavefront OBJ...

3, In the Hierarchy selection dialog, uncheck Universe which clears everything.

  1. Check the boxes for pilot_body, pilot_head and pilot_glass.

  2. Click OK and in the file dialog, select a name e.g. (pilot.obj) and place to save it (I suggest in the Bazze geometries folder.

  3. You should be OK with the default export options that appear next just make sure As Morph Target is NOT checked I believe.

  4. Save the file.

  5. Delete the Spitfire or start a new scene.

  6. Import the pilot.obj into Poser (File->Import->Wavefront OBJ...) I'd Uncheck % of figure size and place on floor.

Tthe texture should apply by default. If it doesn't, apply the spit_vb_pilot_color.jpg in the material room from Bazze's textures. You can apply transparency or a glass material to the goggle's lens also. *Optionally, Save the pilot as a prop in one of your props library folders (I have a propsaircraft folder) if you want to have him handy for other projects.

*You can now load your Thud and position him in the cockpit. I assume Bazze's models are all at the same scale so that should be pretty close. Once you have him in place, parent him to the body of the plane and save the now manned plane to your library (You might want to give it a new name to avoid overwriting the original to make sure it works first).

That's not the only way to do it but hopefully it will work for you. Of course, you can modify the texture if you like, change the blue to OD, maybe ditch the necktie etc.
