6.1 is more difficult to model in than the later version that bwtr linked to. If you can get your hands on old Carrara Pro 4 box, it came with a free copy of Amapi Designer 7. The UK reports that Hexagon 1.2 will be free soon in 3D World Magazine again. It's great for modeling people.

Quote - I bought the "low priced" access to Amapi 7.52 in the expectation of Amapi 8! -----that was NOT a good decission!
You're right. It wasn't. You were only supposed to get the free 6.1 to buy the 7.52 for cheap. And then stop there. Actually, 7.51 was a better version. Anyway, the Amapi programmers chose their destiny. I don't think there are too many software companies like them left anymore, thank goodness.

Amapi is dead. Forget about it.
If you REALLY want to work with WOW new apps these are, I think, by far the best about.
AND, at very low cost to purchase. (MoI is a Nurbs app like Amapi)

However, even so, Blender 2.5 (FREE) is due very soon and THAT could be the ants pants of value for money of all the apps.

Buy Rhino3D instead of Amapi Pro. Same price or there abouts.
Amapi Pro 7.52 had a bug with one of the new NURBS modes the programmers introduced. G2 still was not supported like it is in Rhino. Rhino has plugins for it as well.

I've got $10,000 to spend on something. Now I can afford something high-end to buy. But I already have modo. Cinema 4D, Maya, Max, Lightwave, SoftImage don't excite me. I'm waiting to see what Rhino 5.0 is all about.

I say start with Hexagon 1.21 or Silo 2.11 for modeling. Then go to ZBrush 3.1. Then go to modo or Lightwave. This is for artists interested in organics will some mechanics.

Problem with Silo is that it is lacking in training resources. It is great if you already worked in another modeling app. like Hexagon or Modo. If your starting out clueless then Silo would be a huge nightmare.
Apparently you can still buy it form Smith Micro...Amapi Pro 7.5

I have Poser 4. Did it come on its own cd or was it on the Poser cd in an extras folder or something like that?
I have to agree that the price SM is asking is crazy considering its a dead program.
Carrara Pro 4 came with three discs. Carrara Pro 4, contents CD, and Amapi Designer 7.16.

Carrara 3 came with a trial version of Amapi. I don't know what Carrara 6 came with.

Carrara Studio 3 was two discs. One was the install disc that also had Amapi 5 and Viewpoint plugin on it. The other was the content disc. I thought the Amapi was a trial version with Carrara Studio 3? But people on their web sites haven't mentioned that fact. I'll have to look at the discs. I would have been using Amapi years sooner if it was the full version back then. I had to buy Amapi after I decided to model in it for the first time. And that was version 7. 5 and 6 were only trials that I had on disc.

In the past, Amapi Pro 7.5 was offered cheap ($249) to existing customers of other software like Poser from the same company. It couldn't hurt to call SM and ask them about it if you have Poser 7 or some other program already from them.
I'm guessing they'll bundle Amapi Pro 7.5 with Poser Pro 2 or similar. Depends on what other software SM buys from some other company.

My understanding is that Smith MIcro is just a reseller.

I see...right now they are very busy trying to bring Shade back. They did the same thing with it but now I guess they figure their market is saturated and the only new growth potential lies in the English market.
The problem is that when you walk away from a product not too many people are going to take the chance that you won't decide to do it again. You would think e-Frontier would first attempt to grab the previous Shade owners, but no, they said they can buy a magazine like everyone else and get the 8.5 release or they can upgrade directly with the same price given to those who weren't previous Shade owners and bought the magazine. Either way their is a new 9 version out and a 10 on the way. Not sure if this will be the last release again but I am betting on it. Perhaps after this failed attempt they will concentrate on Amapi Pro?
Amapi Pro has a much better GUI than Shade. Shade's current GUI reminds me of Ray Dream Designer's from 1995, but worse. I don't care about how great Shade renders after you throw more money at it. As a modeler, Shade has been cultivated in a cramped Japanese mindset and has not reached its user-friendly software stage yet that most American software developers crossed in the mid 1980's.
