Subject: Need some suggestions regarding file sizes

Hi

Well I am trying to prepare a package to upload to the Marketplace, but I am running into a major problem.  The maximum file size they alllow is 70MB in 2 maximum files with a max of 35MB each.  My problem is that after stripping out all unused shaders and objects, I simply cannot get the .car file lower than about 45MB.  Has anyone else run into this problem uploading Carrara items to the marketplace.  I cannot remove anything else without compromising the model.   If you look at the latest post in my gallery, the pack is the lighthouse on the mossy rock and the stairway and Piers.  The model is made of simple spline objects and .jpg format textures were used for the skins.  I wish they would up the file maximum here or at least let you use .rar since it compresses things smaller.  I don't think they realize how large a simple .car file can be.  Those minimums work fine for poser stuff since the files for poser tend to be on the smallish side.  But with Carrara, you either have to save all the texture maps internally or you have to deal with a few dozen or more external maps which take up even more space.  Argh... Any suggestions deeply appreciated while I still have some hair to  pull out.

This .car file size is 8.2MB?

No, I can't seem to get it smaller than 45MB.  44.8 to be exact.  It is extremely detailed.

Carrara is not particularly efficient with internally saved texture maps. In fact, sometimes the internally saved shaders are twice as large as an externally saved shader including all of the texture maps.

So, for packaging up a scene, it's usually best to simply locate the texture maps right next to your .car file and link to them - either having them in a folder or simply sitting there. This way the file path will be consistent when unzipped on a users computer. Then, you'll need to include a written description about why and where the maps should go for users.

Thats the main reason I hate using externals on packages I put up to sell.  It can get confusing to novice users.  I solved the problem anyway.  I just made two separate .car files, one had the Lighthouse and cottage, and the other had all of the environment stuff like the terrains, pier, stairs, rails etc.  I managed to get them to about 27MB each and I'm uploading right now as a a matter of fact.  Morte of a pain and larger files, but they are pretty much foolproof.
