Subject: Illustrator files

Is there a way to bring in an illustrator file with several layers and then have each layer to be modifiable? I'm doing a map of the State of Texas and I want to have several of the counties to be editable in Carrara. I've "vectorized" the State of Texas on one layer and the counties on other layers. I see that in Carrara I have the Texas and I can see the different layers but I don't know how to edit each one of them individually. (Forgive the loaded question and any help would be appreciated.) Hi Mpal, Carrara does not support layered .ai files. What you can do is save the counties as a separatae .ai file and bring that in as a different spline object. For complete control, you could do county by county. What is it that you are trying to do? if you're not changing the shape of objects, you might be able to accomplish your needs with texture maps instead. Mark

Thanks for your response. I figured that Carrara wouldn't handle layered files but you've given me a great idea. When I bring the layered file into Carrara, though, I can see the handles on the outline of the Texas map and on each of the counties so I thought that maybe I could separate those counties in Carrara somehow (like make them into their own layer). I'll try to bring them in individually. Thanks again for helping this newbie. Mpal

The way I usually pull of tricks like this is to bring in one .ai file with all of the lines. Then within Carrara, I duplicate the spline object and delete lines that I don't want in the duplicate/extra parts. That way everything stays perfectly registered.

That's a great Idea. I'll try it. Thanks for your help. Mpal
