Subject: Need advice from folks how have em... Carrara Basic vs Carrara Studio

TygerCub ( ) posted Tue, 27 April 2004 at 9:22 AM · edited Wed, 01 July 2026 at 10:42 AM

I got a tax return and ain't afraid to use it! Well, kinda afraid. Terrified, actually. I want Carrara 3D, but after visiting the web site, can't decide if I'd be better off buying the "Basic" for $99 or a side-grade "Studio" for $249. I want to model. I already have a couple of low-grade modeling programs (Anim8or and Wings3D), and do okay with box modeling... but I want to work with a more organic system such as metaballs. I'm ready for the next step in modeling software's evolution. I want to make my own characters and bone them and use them in Poser, Vue4 and whichever Carrara I end up buying. Did anyone on this forum buy the Basic? Are ya happy with it? Does it do what you expected? Would you upgrade to Studio given the chance? Any help is appreciated!

Tyger, What you buy will depend on what you really want out of it. 3D Basics lacks a few of the features that Studio has, particularly Vertex Modelling. This is a primary use item for me, so I couldn't do without. Then again if you use Wings and Anim8or, then you may have a way to bring in your models. As for metaballs... well, I just haven't found a good use for them yet and they get a bit difficult to work with sometimes (my 2 pence). If you REALLY want to get into the heavy stuff (like images bigger than 1024x1024, or GI and HDRI) get the full blown package... you won't regret it.... You might be a bit overwhelmed while learning, but having the extras when you need them is so much better than not and then having to buy the full later... Again, my 2 pence... Ken dork.gif

cckens, Thanks for the reply! There are a lot of packages available on the site. Which one would you recommend? Would you happen to know a tutorial on Vertex Modelling I could read?

Check out litst site from the following link, lots of other links and stuff there to check out and litst has a good head modeling tutorial. Brian

When I teach Carrara classes, I suggest Basic as a learning tool which can be upgraded later if need be. The components which are shared between the two packages are essentially identical which means the metaball modeler in studio is the same as in basics. I would suggest that you're probably interested in the higher ended rendering engine which is available in Studio (that's just a guess based on the fact that you want to go to Vue). I'm also guessing that your bend on wanting a vertex modeler coupled with a metaball modeler makes me suspect you're not a casual user and would like more power. This again leads me toward suggesting studio. The most frustrating thing when I teach people who are basic users is the lack of some of the more simple tools which make the renders a lot better (light cones are a simple example). I think you'll like studio better. -Kix
